Major bank shuts down ATMs and closes branches in South Africa

Nedbank has reduced its ATM footprint in South Africa by 345 devices over the past six years and has continued to reduce the number of cash-accepting ATMs since 2024.

The bank, headquartered in Sandton, has continued "rightsizing" its physical footprint after briefly adding new branches and ATMs in 2022.

People don't need Bank specific ATM's anymore as they have many other ways to draw cash, most simply get their cash at the till while grocery shopping. No need to go from one queue to another.

Well they're going to have one less client soon. They've been charging me a grand for an incoming USD transaction for the past two months and can't tell me what has changed since the prior 20 years. 3 calls to their support desk and 3 'escalations' so far.

Any update on this?
Where do you see this charge? Is it the "Fees" component in the International Payments history?

I suppose fewer people handle cash nowadays. Someone paid me cash recently. The only thing I can imagine using it for is fuel. I carry only a celphone already for some years; all payments go through either the payment app, banking app or eft.

ATM bombings and cash in transit heists would be two reasons for the right sizing.

It's the norm, the media prepares you for what is coming, so when it happens, you are already used to the idea. And yes, we are seeing a lot of cashless society articles because that is the plan, if the only means to transact is electronically then government controls and monitors 100% of everything you do which is the end game. We have many people who sarcastically point out that everything is already monitored, which is of course true, the only real difference is that everything is now being unified under one government-controlled system instead of dozens of state and business owned ones as the system currently exists.
