Serious problem with new spam call rules in SA

A legal expert said the apathetic nature of South Africans and their distrust of institutions were weaknesses in the country's new spam call regulations.

Speaking to 702, Deneys director Rosalind Lake said it would be up to individual South African consumers to ensure the new rules were enforced.

How do you report somebody if you have very little valid information on them? Does anybody in their right mind think these spam callers give you the true and correct information? And the number they dial from is useless.
Due to lack of enforcement, or lack of technical standards, I have found it is entirely possible to hack the number field reported from a SIP trunk so that it appears to be another number that doesn't exist. The debt collectors and other scumbags use this routinely.

Must have holiday brain because I've read through that article 3 times and I still couldn't tell you what the gist of it is...if there's actually any substance to be found.

The ability to block numbers means that Spam callers very seldom get to call you more than once. Effectively the law is catching up after it is irrelevant to the average consumer anyway.

The issue is the big guys are not using "sim boxes"

They get mobile numbers from Vodacom and MTN and route it via a SBC like PortaOne

Inbound calls work and calls are billed at VoIP rates

For calls that Truecaller don't block I press the answer button. I dont pick up the phone. I go make coffee or something and leave my phone so they can talk to the air. Gotta support the cellphone networks with their declining voice revenue.

I just tell them to FEKK off, and go bother someone who appreciates them.
