The official running thread™

I have done it 3 times one of my favourite races, everytime you do it you learn something about yourself. I did one lap and the camping at Van Gaalen a few weeks back trying to ease my foot back to health but seconded some friends who did 14, 16 and 18 laps. My personal record is 12 laps 9am-9pm.

The race is more about fueling than running. Carbo loading days before because you can't eat enough on the day, then high carb intake without filling your stomache. Roughly 30-50 carbs a lap, I mix my own which are 100g of carbs a sachet and have it over 4-5 laps, plus salt and vinegar chips, biltong, boiled potatoes, pretzels, bars, bananas etc.

Force down 500-750ml a lap and stay away from anything super sweet like GU.

The war I have is how much I can intake vs how sick I feel.

I try stay at 7 - 7.30 per lap which leaves like 10mins to feel like a human before starting again. You also need a base/tent where you don't have to worry sleeping, keeping your stuff safe and can refuel.

The wierd part is when it gets dark you feel refreshed until it runs out then a giant crash kicks in, my friends say 12am - 3am is really tough. Some guys do that for 3 days.
Sounds amazing, I'm very close to taking the leap

Haibo. So expensive for basically sugar

You get like 25 gels which are big and you can take a swig before each run. Also use a full one for a big run and just sip on it during the run.

Lasts me like 4-6 months.

For me only maurten gels are better but those are like R80 - R100 per gel which is ridiculous.

I was out running in Welties, and someone in a white C-class Merc deliberately came as close as he could to me, close enough that I slapped his boot as he passed. People like that should be aware that some runners run with keys in hand.... (Or might in the future).

Are there no pavements there?

I'd kill for that average HR at that pace.
It's not accurate, I didn't have my watch on tight enough and only realised half way through my run. I was hovering around 130 and I thought that's very weird, I got very fit or my heart is on it's way out  Then I tightened my watch and it shot up to 165.

New watch. Only my 2nd run with it. At least now I know.

So how far is your max runs if you have just woken up and run fasted? I generally run in the afternoons after work but on weekends I like the morning (Longer runs)

I assume running on a fast and then not refueling on the road? If yes, then generally I can do 15km (if in winter and it's not hot in the morning), otherwise I would need some glucose to run further otherwise there is a risk of hitting the wall and that is not pleasant

Out of interest are you more of a morning runner or afternoon?

Definitely morning, I'm an early bird :) Also, races are in the morning, so it makes sense to train in the morning. In the afternoons I'm usually cooked, no energy to go and run

Yeah me too, morning runs are more fun. Feel more energised. In the afternoon I feel tired quickly.

That's a relief. I was feeling terrible in comparison.

A surprisingly good base run for me today. Not sure what I did to get so much zone 2 in. Guess I managed to just barely hang in the top end for the run.
