Well this really sucks balls...

  • PepsiCo is discontinuing ProNutro in South Africa, 64 years after it was launched.
  • This comes five months after the group faced backlash for its “new generation” ProNutro that consumers rejected.
  • PepsiCo says, despite its best efforts, it could not recreate the original taste and texture with new technology.
Now, five months on, the company says while mixability could be improved, “we were not able to recreate the taste and texture consumers associated with the original ProNutro using the new generation production process”.

The original product – a blend of cooked maize, soya, peanuts and skimmed milk – was roller-dried: slathered onto a scalding, spinning drum, then scraped off as a crisp, dry film.

The roller-drum process was developed in the 1960s, “at a time when water and electricity were more readily available and affordable than they are today”, PepsiCo said.

The ageing equipment was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain, and consistent quality was a growing challenge.

New, more cost-efficient processes have not been able to replicate ProNutro’s distinctive characteristics.

Also, sales of ProNutro had been declining and PepsiCo “continued to subsidise the brand for many years”, it said.

PepsiCo says the production process “could not simply be transferred to another manufacturer or reproduced elsewhere in the same way”.

There was “no clear like-for-like replacement for the original line”, it added, and any major production investment would have pushed up the price substantially.

Earlier this year, PepsiCo told News24 that replacing the old machinery would add about R25 to the price of a 500g pack, a premium it doubted its customers would be willing to pay.

I would have paid the extra R25!

Bye bye, that stuff is gross, even back in the day it was disgusting... in my opinion.
But it is a South African institution, it will be weird not being able to walk past it in the cereal aisle any longer

Was the new version really that bad, considering the old version was already terrible?
Is there nothing else in the market locally or internationally that is close to the original recipe?

It got worse after the sugar tax thing, cannot imagine how bad it was for this recipe.

So... we broke the recipe, refused to fix it and instead of admitting every decision we made on this is wrong we decided the best thing was to discontinue it.

Nobody to blame, Just "one of those things".

MBAs making things awesome since never.
PepsiCo said fk you basically
