I am using an OPNSense Router/Firewall and just copied the PPPoE info from the Nokia UX; I have not had a problem in 2 years.

My Nokia Router is in the cupboard since day 1 - they did not want to give me credit for giving it back.
I'm using an RPI5 (was RPI4)
Debian 13 (Raspberry OS Lite)
Systemd networkd configured vlans
PPPoE - copied the username and password from the router connect via VLAN 16
nftables firewall (based on OpenWrt settings)
eth0 connected to trunk port on TP-LINK IEEE 802.1Q VLAN capable switch
VLAN 3 - internal, 7 - IoT, 8 - Guest, 16 - MetroFibre ONT
wlan0 (WiFi)
Standby wifi client to LTE/5G when no fibre
Docker
pihole - DNS & DHCP
vnstat - network performance monitor
wireguard - VPN
smokeping - network monitor
samba - backup share
homeassistant, iot stuff

Wifi is provided by a mixture of Cudy (WiFi6) and MikroTik (WiFi5) APs flashed with OpenWrt, connected via ethernet cable to TP-Link switch

Tested with:
  • MWEB on MetroFibre
  • PluxNet on MetroFibre
  • AfriHost on OpenServe
Works well, low latency, stable. secure

Been using RPI4/5 as a router for last 6 years - never going back to a dumb single function router.

My internet went down at around 8 this morning, logged a call, shortly after, tec's arrived at around 14:30 and repaired splice in on boundary, back up and running.

Currently having some issues, all started out as trying to do work training a 3 minute video took 13 minutes to load 130MB without cloudflare - with cloudflare was loading fast enough for me to actually do training live. - Cloudflare stopped working on the training which I can only put down to the PHP2Shell precautions my company took.

Loads of back and forth I saw a weird issue with Openserve speedtests having high latency and complained about that as well, I've had routing issues before and feel like they were back. So I raised this to them and they were doing testing in the evening and then said they asked Metrofibre to reprovision the line.

Wake up this morning still can't do training and then start looking do a speedtest to their own servers reaching merely 200 down on my 1000/500 account but the upload hit 940+. Try a different server not even getting 30/30.

They say restart the router, no change. I've lost all confidence in them, they use to be great, their pricing is also the cheapest currently. But I feel I need to start looking to change, as every support instance we do the same tango.

I need an ISP with decent international speeds and routing for gaming - I've complained in the past I will have 20/30 ms more latency then my second pc or vice versa and they just say the same BS "Once the traffic leaves our core its not our problem" But why the hell is the latency not the same....... Constantly my downloads would Max out 10MB/s - 12/13 MB/s on certain sites and even windows/xbox games downloads. SABC also buffers certain times of the day then I have to switch on cloudflare vpn for a usable experience. What am I paying for if they can't deliver anything working, I've had to get ExitLag because I use to game with Europe friends and COD on french servers always had this weird stutter for me I couldn't explain but it was never on the UK servers, got ExitLag and never saw it again.

All these speedtest are on the same Active connection within 5 minutes of eachother

I only go 1080p max but will try 4k tonight. I guess AI can make mistakes.
Even 1440p will buffer sometimes, it's as if anything above 1080p isn't being cached locally because as soon as you change to those resolutions, bandwidth is low, but 1080p will shoot to 60+ Mbps burst instantly.

@Afrigirl, why is DBN YT CDN so kak?

I've been playing 4k today and what I'm noticing is the buffer health sits on around 6-20s when on 1080p its around 40-120s.

I watched this at 2x speed just now in 4k and it was fine.
