I am using an OPNSense Router/Firewall and just copied the PPPoE info from the Nokia UX; I have not had a problem in 2 years.

My Nokia Router is in the cupboard since day 1 - they did not want to give me credit for giving it back.
I'm using an RPI5 (was RPI4)
Debian 13 (Raspberry OS Lite)
Systemd networkd configured vlans
PPPoE - copied the username and password from the router connect via VLAN 16
nftables firewall (based on OpenWrt settings)
eth0 connected to trunk port on TP-LINK IEEE 802.1Q VLAN capable switch
VLAN 3 - internal, 7 - IoT, 8 - Guest, 16 - MetroFibre ONT
wlan0 (WiFi)
Standby wifi client to LTE/5G when no fibre
Docker
pihole - DNS & DHCP
vnstat - network performance monitor
wireguard - VPN
smokeping - network monitor
samba - backup share
homeassistant, iot stuff

Wifi is provided by a mixture of Cudy (WiFi6) and MikroTik (WiFi5) APs flashed with OpenWrt, connected via ethernet cable to TP-Link switch

Tested with:
  • MWEB on MetroFibre
  • PluxNet on MetroFibre
  • AfriHost on OpenServe
Works well, low latency, stable. secure

Been using RPI4/5 as a router for last 6 years - never going back to a dumb single function router.

My internet went down at around 8 this morning, logged a call, shortly after, tec's arrived at around 14:30 and repaired splice in on boundary, back up and running.
