Hi guys, need some help here. I've noticed that I'm getting charged R17.54 every 2nd or 3rd day for an MMS. The thing is I never ever use MMS on my phone and I never ever subscribed to anything. I contacted Autopage about it and they say that it's not their problem and I need to contact the company and unsubcribe from the service.

The thing is I never did subscribe to anything  I poked around on the net a bit and found out that alot of people are having the same exact problem and there doesn't seem to be a solution  and if I try and call the number (0831236701) that the MMS is coming from I get a message that the number does not exist.

Anybody having the same issues?

Hi

Check on your online Autopage billing who is billing you. You will then need to contact that WASP member. Autopage is a virtual Service Provider so there will be a lot of passing the buck between them and MTN on who to help you.

Also the number 0831236701 is not a real number, its a virtual number used to bill your handset by MTN. You will actually see 2 more digits and this identifies the rate at which you are being billed. Did you see this number on your itemised billing?

You say your receiving MMS: Is it an actually MMS or is it a SMS with a link to a wap page?

(BTW: I work for a WASP and I develop and maintain our inbound callcenter that handles subscription queries)

Hi thanks for the reply, I checked my online billing and it just shows me the number but not who it belongs to, and the two extra digits is '25' what does this mean?

I think it is an MMS, I never ever opened it always deleted it.

And this is why I say that MTN, Vodacom and CellC have to implement a default-deny policy to stop world+dog from subscribing you to any kind of service without your consent.

ok so now we know what the code means..... how do we stop the fraudulent billing?

Cancel phone account, or move to a civilised country.

MTN, govt, icasa, they won't help.

Best of luck.

EDIT: Just thought about the small claims court. It's free to institute a claim, afaik. Anyone know what that'd achieve??

I would call them and tell them that you never subscribed and that they must send you proof that you contracted for the service. You can also tell them that if they do not furnish you with proof, then you will lodge a complaint with the WASPA. I would also give them a deadline to furnish you with proof. If they dont give it to you by then, then you can report them. If they cannot prove that you subscribed, then they should give you your money back. Once they do.. report them to the WASPA anyways... I hate these fly by nights that fraudulently bill people. If you take a look at some of the previous WASPA judgments, you'll see that some of these guys get nailed pretty hard where it hurts the most.. their bank account. So if you threaten them with reporting them to the WASPA, they usually give you your money back. This is what happened with my wife recently.

Just an update guys....

Still trying to get Autopage to tell me who is responsible for the WASP charge

I'm going to document all that I do to try and get this thing sorted on this thread, so that other victims will know what to do in the future.

Ok. Autopage finally got back to me. The company that was billing me was Mobile 365 (08611166666), I contacted them and found out that I was on their billing list. They then removed my number :) and I inquired about a refund. They then said that they run the service for other companies and they will find out which company billed me and get back to me.

What I need to know is do I report Mobile 365 to WASPA or do I wait to find out the name of the other company and report them  ?

absolutely, report mobile 365 without delay. they're charging what ever company for the services they're offering and they're just as responsible.

thanks for the advice guys :) the other company was Blink Mobile and I reported both companies :D lets see how this plays out ...

How
I have the same problem, but R10pm. I have been trying for so long but Autopage keep telling me that MTN is not responding. So i have no idea which WASP is doin this.
I am actually having many probs with these guys where Autopage are saying that MTN is having problems and not doin their job.
I actually dont know who is lying here, Autopage or MTN.
What i do know is that i am defn moving away from both once my contract ends (:( quite sonme time to go)

Best thing you can do. My recommendation is to never sign through a SP like Nashua or Autopage. My experience has only ever been terrible and these types of SP's are just middle men who pass the buck all the time. Additionally, when contracted to one of them, MTN or Vodacom won't provide you with direct service and support, they tell you to go to your SP - you get shoved from pillar to post and have the exact frustrations you're experiencing now.
Only ever sign directly with Vodacom SP or MTN SP and you know who you're dealing with and get support at any walk in store/outlet nationwide, not just a branch of Autopage or Nashua.

I had the same problem with Autopage, contacted them directly and nothing happened for a week. Posted 2 complaints on Hellopeter.com and they called me in 3 days time. Try it .... www.hellopeter.com you have to register to lodge a complaint, it's free.

Can companies subscribe you to weekly/monthly premium billing services by paper? Or must the request initiate from your cellphone?

You know how you can subscribe to all these crappy media sites, and they charge you R10 p/w etc.

what if you fill out a form for an order and in the fine print where you signed, it says "if you supplied a mobile number you acknowledge that you will be subscribed to our service at R10 p/m unless cancelled"

Is that legal or is it only legal if the request to be subscribed comes from the mobile no in the form of an SMS?

Numbers

Please note the number mentioned in the thread is a billing code used by MTN.

Their are various companies in South Africa that all ues the SAME code

To identify the actual billing provider call MTN and they will assist you
