087 Number codec

Anyone kow of an operator offering an 087 number with G711 codec? Most of the ones I've come across are using G729..

Switch Telecom (www.switchtel.co.za) supports G.711 a-law and allows low-volume* clients to use it, although discourages it because of the bandwidth overhead and susceptibility to quality degradation.

The bandwidth usage is 80kbit/s per call in each direction (64kb/s voice payload plus 16kb/s headers). Another way of looking at this is that if you're paying R70 per gig for ADSL bandwidth, it works out to 8c per minute.


* Low-volume would typically be someone who spends less than R500 per month on VoIP phone calls.

UUNet & Telkom?

As far as I know, UUNet supports the G711 aLaw and uLaw codecs (but I may be wrong). Try UUnet's reseller http://www.techconcepts.co.za


Oh... and I have just seen that our glorious Telkom also supports the G711 aLaw codec. See https://ticomm.telkomsa.net/Voip-phase1/.
