Hi there,

I have been getting 1.5mb/s on my 4mb line ever since 4mb came out... im trying to find out why and if there's anything i can do to get 4mb..

my line attenuation is 47.9 ds so surely i should be getting +-3.5mb/s?

Line Attenuation DS 47.9
Line Attenuation US 25.5
SNR Margin DS 10.6
SNR Margin US 12.0
Data Rate DS 1952
Data Rate US 512
Loss of Signal 0
Loss of Frame 0
Latency FAST

Telkom have told me that im 2.5km away from the DSLAM which, according to them, isn't too bad.
I asked them to re-sync and reset my line, check for noise and to reset the dslam.. They say that im set to 4mb on their side.
Nothing has helped so i logged a fault. they then let me know that there was a problem and they replaced a cable and closed the fault...

I'm still getting the same speeds and now they wanna send someone to me to see if the problem is on my side but they'll charge R196 is they find nothing..

could my modem have any effect?

Any help would be appriciated..

Thanks.

Modem is a possible issue. Try using a different one? (loan one from someone)...

Ja, it could very well be a modem issue. I'd try another one first. I'd also try another account if you have access to one. Who is your ISP? Tbh, I've found in the past that their R196 call out fee is more a scare tactic than anything, because 99% of the time it IS a Telkom fault.

Im on the do3 package..

based on the line attenuation figures does that mean that the problem is not with my line? ie. does that figure take all factors into account like the exchange for example?

is it possible that telkom are not syncing my line at 4mb?

thanks

Yep, try another modem.. different modems handle high attennuation differently and sync at different rates

my 4meh was and sometimes does sync at 640

some crappy line fault TWICE
rite now is 2016/xxx

worst case is when i get disconected every 12 seconds :mad:

oh and my neighbors dogs bit the techie :wtf:

ima go spamm them on the phone

reset dslam blah blah its even on its own dedicated line

thanks for the suggestions guys, i just joined mweb uncapped and am now getting 1.7mb/s... slightly better but still not great. will only be able to try another modem on sunday so i hope thats the problem.. my current modem is a planet ADE-4100 and i dont think it supports adsl 2+

i just checked the user manual of my modem and and it supports a downstream data rate of 8mbps... does this rule out my modem?

The best modem i've used so far is the Siemens Gigaset SX762. Second to that is the Netgear DG834/845G v3, and then a Linksys AG241 which I dont think you get anymore. Just a few to look out for... I believe the Billion routers work well too, and I've also heard good things about D-Link routers. See if you can lend one before buying. Where do you stay? If you're near the West Rand and don't mind driving to and from me, I don't mind lending you my modems to do tests with for a day... PM me if relevant

thanks for the offer fragtion but i stay in Edenvale.. not to worry tho cause im gonna try a friend's on sunday..

Sorry to revive this thread but i finally got a new router and this one is now syncing at 2.5mb/s..

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin

:
11.5 11.7 db

Line Attenuation

:
51.0 28.0 db

Data Rate

:
2539 511 kbps

again, i'm 2.5km's from the DSLAM..

any ideas?
Thanks

I doubt it would be a problem on your side. Most likely candidate is the exchange you are connected to which is acting up / over worked. I should mention that I am no expert, but this has been my experience.

PS: I get DL speeds up to 2.2 mbps on a good day, over weekends it drops to around 1.7 mbps. Many trials with Telkom later, best they can give me is: "There is a problem on your exchange". This has been going on for some months now with no progress made.

The actual phone line wire from your house to your exchange is not 2.5km's long, it's nearly 4km long (judging from your Downstream Line Attennuation of 51 db) which also explains why you're only syncing at 2.5mbps. Either that, or the condition of the copper in that line is not optimal. Do you hear a noise on the voice line? It could be water on the line. You could try another modem, such as the Netgear DG834G with DGTeam firmware, or Siemens 762SX, two I've used that get some edge over the rest on longer lines...

Yeh, this is a new modem and it's now syncing around 3mb..

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin : 5.0 12.0 db
Line Attenuation : 51.0 30.1 db
Data Rate : 2947 511 kbps

My last modem was constantly at 1.9mb's so clearly the modem has made a difference.. The problem however is that even tho i'm now syncing at a much better rate, if i do a speed test im only getting around 1.3mb/s??

Could that be my isp holding me back? Surely if the line sync's at 3mb then i should be getting 3mb/s? If noise and exchange were an issue than i'd just be syncing at a very low rate?

Terrible ping at a terrible speed..

Thanks again

No not necessarily. My line syncs at 4mbps (always has), and is as stable as can be, but my speed tests, and download speed is at most 2.2mbps.
