This is a very deeply worrying trend...

I'm not sure if the article is wrong in its first paragraph about 1 in 6 pupils getting less than 10%.. but even if 1 in 6 are failing at 30% its worrying to say the least..

and only 9% are classed as having an adequate understanding of the material. I'm not sure what percentage that equates to, but adequate can't be much more than 60%

And these people get to vote. Kinda crazy when you think about it.

I saw the full table of results in yesterday's "Die Burger".

Per subject, it shows the failure rate, the average % obtained and by how much certain subject marks were adjusted.

They are truly shocking.

/I will try to source the table.

More shocking is that you need to know less than a third of the work to actually pass.

More than half the matrics who wrote physical science got less than 30% for the subject, according to figures the paper obtained from education quality assurance body Umalusi.

The average mark for the maths paper was 29%, 32% for physical science and 38% for life sciences.

I never knew it was this bad.

And this after the majority move to the maths literacy (arithmetic) classes.

since when do you need maths to vote?

/facepalm

Nobody said you need maths to make your cross .. but given the dismal level of education most voters have, how can you expect them to make an educated decision as to who to vote for?
No wonder they still vote according to skin color & can be bought by food parcels and t-shirts.

And you're surprised why?
The anc's plan is right on schedule -fcking the country up. (This is probably the ONLY plan that is ACTUALLY on schedule.)
Kudos anc, kudos. :erm:

Well my daughter was taken out of a gov school immediately after I met the teachers, put her in a private school and her marks went up by 15-25% within a term last year.

I blame the ANC and their followers as well as the education ministers, their executive and the teachers.

Hmmm, that is truly disgusting as when I wrote maths, science and biology, there were so many 'easy' questions. While the hard questions were changing, most of the papers just needed you to know which formula to use (for maths and science... biology just needs you to memorize crap).

The sad thing is that it's difficult to people to reason, and evaluate information! You are given the speed, and distance of the projectile, and you are asked for time... if you can't just look through the formula sheet (given) and go "oh, this one has all three! I need to just reorder it", then you really are in deep crap for making informed decisions about say... who your next president should be!

Every year we add a million + to the system that knows nothing and expects (demands) everything.

What does one expect in a country where HIV positive people outnumbers the people paying income tax?

//sigh

This makes one wonder as to who is to blame... I say the students & teachers carry an equal blame.

49% and lower should be fail. I wonder what the ratio would look like if it were really so?

If you looked at other countries you'd realise that the choice of who to vote for is seldom much more than an emotional decision.

Well a lot of white people from the 80s and earlier wouldn't have matric for a start.
