Hi guys,

I have a standard 384k line which is connected to my Netgear ADSL router etc. I would like to give Afrihost a try next month alongside my existing account, and since I still have my old Telkom Mega 200 router I was thinking of setting it up with the Afrihost account. But can two routers be connected to a single ADSL line? Does it halve the bandwidth between the two routers? I know it works somehow though - had my old router running when I was setting up the new router and both were able to browse...

All the best,

Philip

no, you can't have two routers on the same ADSL line. Only one can synch at a time.

You need to use bridge mode or half bridge mode in the one router to handle the two accounts.

Okay, that does make sense. I think one way that I can do this is to have both set up and connected but only one of them actually on at a time and synchronised - then once the bandwidth is used up on the current router turn it off and turn on the other one.

It's just strange that it seemed to work with the two routers connected and running, and it was actually by mistake. Now that I think of it, the same thing happened when we had the Telkom guy came out to connect our line to the telkom ADSL port down the road - he used his notebook to test that the connection was working and at the same time he had me get my router up and running. Very strange...

Anyway, wouldn't really run the two routers simultaneously - was just curious about it though. :)

Thanks for the replies.

Philip.

Because I would like to still have my current ISP for the moment while I am giving Afrihost a try. But yes, I could always do that too. :)

You could also go the PPPOE way then you can dial into afrihost when you want to.

Okay, not too clued up, how would one set it in order to do that? If I am understanding this, you mean within the OS you would have a separate broadband dialler of some sort?

Just dial whichever account you want to use from Windows and remove the details from the modem. And put it in bridged mode.
