So I went ahead and upgraded my line to 4 mbps today. (From 512). The telkom guy said it would take 7 days but i noticed a difference in speed straight away. A speedtest confirmed that I now have 1mps speeds. What I was wondering was, is this as fast as my line will sync, or is this just temporary till the exchange enables the 4mbps speeds? Has this happened to anyone else.

Get into your router, via your web browser.
Somewhere in there, you should see a couple of things:
downlink/Uplink sync speed, noise margins(SNR) and attenuation.
Post that here so we can have a look. It should give you some sort of idea of what's possible on your line.

When you reset,you'll need to re-configure your ISP login account username and password...so make sure you have that before resetting.
I eventually found it. It was admin/trendchip. But now that I've reset the bloody thing, I enter the details that came with my afrihost account and it doesn't want to connect. I just keep getting flashing lights. I think I've reset something else that I wasn't meant to.

It's really odd. I can use my old telkom marconi router to connect. It has been reset to factory defaults, and I simply enter my afrihost username and password into a dial up connection in win7 and it connects. But I can't do the same with my mecer modem even though it's been reset as well.

is there not a setup utility from the mecer modem website?
Odd. I just switched off the modem overnight and it seemed to have sorted itself out by this morning. I went into the modem through the web browser and have posted the data rate etc below. I noticed that the speed was up to about 1.8 this morning, but still nowhere near 4.

I asked when I was upgrading and they said it was able to support 4. I mean, even 2 meg is a huge difference in speed. I was considering getting the 384 uncapped at SAOL, but I'm really glad I didn't. I'd rather have teh extra speed. Makes everything much easier.
