10 dope gadgets from CES 2024

The coolest gadgets unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 include a face-scanning security lock, a smart home beer brewer, a noise-reducing mask that also keeps your conversations private, and an exercise bike that can charge your electronics.

CES is widely regarded as the world's biggest tech expo. Four thousand exhibitors are participating in this year's event, including most of the world's foremost tech companies.

Of course there will be another smart beer brewing machine, one of hundreds in the last five years and which will fail as miserably as the rest. Heating elements that cannot be repaired, valves made from some alloy of steel and cow dung that corrode after a couple of beers and leaking joints in inaccessible places. Not to mention the app will either crash constantly or try and copy your entire phone to the manufacturer's unsecured cloud.

And the "recipes" will be pre-mixed by the manufacturer, will have encoded chips on the pouches and cost three times the price of a Muntons or Mangrove Jacks' pre-hopped malt packs.

Not to mention for R30K+ you can buy more craft beer than you'll ever be able to make with this thing.
 
The obsession with AI in almost everything makes my eyes and ears bleed.
For more than 90% of the time I'm watching those CES videos talking about the new AI in product X I don't have the slightest idea of what the "AI" is actually doing.

My favourite is BMW now having a large language model AI in their cars so you can ask the vehicle about the vehicle... Like a ChatGPT trained on the BMW manual and all the gadgets and crap that goes with that. Cars already age like sh*t, imagine that thing in 5 years from now.

The future is f**ing stupid.

My first thought as well when I saw the AI oven. Does it interview the raw steak and then interprets its feelings before cooking it?
 
These transparent screens look pretty coool - but I can't think a real world use.

This is what happens when you try to hamfist Silicon Valley BS into everything.

Allow me to break your mind with some actual innovation/engineering, created at a time when people were actually walking on the moon instead of tweeting about it... and the best part is, you cannot buy something like this today.


Imagine that thing being created today. It'll require actuators, motors, chips, circuit boards, sensors everywhere, it'll probably have WiFi (because reasons), it'll be irreparable, cost the same as a Playstation 5, last only two years or gets bricked when the company shuts down their IoT servers and have almost zero value on the 2nd hand market.

I thought of this often. Why on earth does a toaster even have to beep when it is done when you can hear the actual mechanism kicking up?
