It has been confirmed to me today by Telkom that by the end of the year, Telkom will implement a 10gb limit on local traffic.

Hey DEAN - more info if possible, please, e.g. does the service 'disappear' after the local limit is reached, what limits on international if this local is imposed, do customers have a choice, etc...

As far as I understood the meeting,

a 10GB local cap, and 3GB International, The reason behind this is many people have been creating VPN solutions, and this has caused major losses at Telkom

Imagine a 10 site VPN using ADSL, Basiclay it would cost you R 2000 in accounts, and Telkom would have to provide 10 x 512k local lines.

This has caused many problems on there frame network as well as affected there sales of VPN, and Diginet which is 10 times the price and uses the same technology (or similar)

The Internet would stop at 10GB.

BTW: there was a mention of Telkom having 32000 accounts, so work that out at R 600 a line. per month !

They creating a local cap because they not making money on their rip off Diginet.
Telkom you Become worst everytime you open your mouth.

Google is so smart,I typed in Hellkom and guess what google said

Don`t you mean.....<insert evil laugh>
TELKOM!

this they have been talking about for ages and it is to prevent users using ADSL instead of diginet ... the thing is 64kbs line is 20Gb running 100% so it is not the end of the world but these ****ers should try make it cheaper not more expensive ...

So things like decap.co.za will be useless now cause you can`t connect if you reached 10gb.

Have you noticed that since ADSL was first introduced, we have not seen any added advantages, instead we're getting less and less. For example. In the beginning they did not combine up and down, they just counted whatever came down. They never used to shape, they now do. And now we only have 10GB local. ADSL was not advertised like this initially. What will they do next? Tell us we can't connect during the day and only at night? It's getting more and more ridiculous. Having to spend R1000 a month and getting this shoddy watered down service is quite sickening.

Mkay - 10GB Local. Inevitable I guess.

Isnt that a reasonable enough limit for a business for one/two/even three users though ?

Obviously it isnt enough for non-business use, and never will be.
By applying the 10GB limit they are shutting the door on "re-selling" ADSL.

Lets review:

For at least R 1100 a month, we get 3GB Intl, 10GB Local shared and shaped bandwidth.

If you run ADSL for 5 years (R66,000), then you could've almost owned a nice second hand car instead of 3*12*5 = 180GB of international (70%) junk. Or - spend 1100 a month on games, cool hardware, travel ...

You can no longer play even the simplest real-time international games.
(At least 300ms lag no matter what.)

Local gaming still works - but because of the CAPPING INTL + LOCAL calculation, you will not use ADSL for local gaming until you are capped.

It's time to smell the roses and to stop making Teklom richer.

IF YOU ARE NOT RUNNING A BUSINESS - STOP USING TEKLOM ADSL, YOU ARE SERIOUSLY WASTING YOUR MONEY.

DEAN ::::: PS - Did they say that they were going to calculate the 3GB and the 10GB separately - if so, then that changes everything and the service may be feasable.

The more you know - the worse it gets.

Good question, I think a lot of businesses may still consider a VPN solution if you have a 13GB cap in effect.

To be honest with you, they have not made it clear to me how the CAP will work, however, I have a theory that they will implement the International cap once you have reached 3gb of local or int traffic and then local will continue for 7gb, however this is just theory.

You see, there is a problem for Telkom, if you have one account - 10 ppl can share it, so therefore BMW could buy 1 account and run a country wide VPN for R 250 so this is the one of the reasons the are implementing it.

Can anybody comment on the legality of implementing a national cap i.t.o. the Terms and Conditions or AUP?

currently all bandwidth measureing is taking place on the access server [radius accounting] there is no distinction between local/international so my theory on how they will do this is as follows

3Gb as is now once you go over this you will be allowed a further 7Gb ... once this is reached access will be denied ... i work there and i know the mindset and mentality unfortunately they dont give a ****

I do agree with this, also have you seen my OT: VOIP LEGAL in mywireless section, it would then make sense for Telkom to cap it as imiagine all the VOIP providers.

I may be wrong = but I believe there could be a legal case made out against Telkom should they go this route. I signed up for ADSL with a restricted international service after 3Gig usage, and no restrictions on local usage after the initial 3Gig - that is what my deal with Telkom was - and their website still says that.

I think if they do change to a total 10Gig limit a court might just rule against them.

Good Point Doekvoet.

But one thing is clear now. Telkom can differentiate local and international traffic. We knew it, but they failed to admit to it before.

Doekvoet, I agree. Thats what I said in my point above. You sign up for a service and instead of making your service better, along the way Telkom starts slowly taking features away from that service. But they do not reduce the cost. This is simply not right. Take a look at any ADSL provider overseas and you will see that they are constantly working towards making the service better. But not in South Africa. Telkom takes your money and then prevents you from using the service as it was intended. It sickens me.

doekvoet: I'm pretty sure that Telkom probably have something in the contract saying that they reserve the right to make changes to the service provided at any time. Don't quote me, but it'd be likely something similar is there.

Well in the light of the news froms the DoC, perhaps Telkom will change their stance on the matter as now they will have to be competitive. And by next year their will be many offereings in the market that will influence this.

Either Telkom are really stupid (not unrealistic) :) OR they know something we don't but in light of all 'good' announcements coming out of Dept. of Communications, if I were Telkom I'd be implementing products/policies to attract customers instead of p!ssing them off and alienating them... makes no sense ??

well that kinda screws things, i hope they do this, to shoot themselves in the foot, and catch a wake up call!

i'm the gingerbread man!
