10 GB Local Cap Limit

Not things I can repeat publicly, as this would be tantamount to causing the kind of feeding frenzy currently in the US elections, or that going on in the 'CUG' threads of MyWi on this forum. I don't want to lose my contacts, either. What I've said does hold, however, as Dr Ivy herself has intimated publicly...
 
While, you cannot coment, and I do understand why, in your personal appinion ? do you think SA is going to see the most competitive Telecomunications (data/voice/wireless) in Africa / The World ?

No further comment, other than to repeat that Dr Ivy's further announcements should level the playing fields drastically, if not change them entirely, and that comment on the consequences of this would be mere speculation and potentially false conjecture. Let's rather wait and see what transpires - for all we know, there may be some earth-shattering event between now and then, which could even cause a complete about-face, or something entirely unexpected. Something to think about: investment negotiations are usually conducted out of the public eye to prevent speculation and derailment of the process, and the recent liberalisation of our telecomms has pricked the interest of many. What this may lead to could be very exciting, or extremely disappointing - wish I had a crystal ball...
 
Hang about mates, aren't ISPs going to be allowed to whack down their own concentrators at the DSLAMs by december, allowing them to provide their own bandwidth and thus own caps, prioritisation etc? Thus putting a 10gb cap on local makes no sense for Telkom as not only will their be alternatives to ADSL on the horizon, but there will be ADSL alterantives readily available?

Or has Telkom recently bought shares in IS?
 
From what the articles I have read, yes we will be able to.

Could anyone tell me if there is an isp in South Africa which doesn't have a 3 or 10GB cap limit?

Hi wildrob

You can have a cap as large as you like, as long as you're willing to spend the money. It will cost you around R250 (depending on ISP) per 3GB. Until Telkom gets dethroned we don't have much of a choice. Hopefully after February next year each ISP will be able to decide what kind of cap to enforce.

So will my e-mail contibute to local? I receive quite a bit of mail and am tired of that taking away from my 3gig.
 
Well, some local sites are slow because Telkom is a rip-off so sites like MyADSL are hosted on an international server so it's slow.

And of course Telkrap website loads fastest when capped....[}:)]

Sorry to hop in so late in the conversation, this would imply that the 3 gig limit on international traffic is infact calculated on a cumulative of all traffic, in other words we start the month with 3 gb do a download from IS ftp local server for argument sake of a Linux distro costing say 1.8gb for the 3 disk set, and now only have 1.2gb left before being throttled on international bandwidth.If you download three gigs from IS you have no international access at all for that month.

There are 3, 6 and 9 GB options without having to use separate usernames and passwords. Also the bandwidth doesn't go through Saix and the contention ratios are better. It uses a standard Telkom ADSL line, just change your username and password. Sometime in January there will be an uncapped option and the company is working on a static ip feature aswell.

Actually, it's more like every byte of data going to or from the BRAS. The point being, if you're connecting to, say, an IS BRAS instead of an SAIX BRAS, then conditions such as how a cap (if any) is calculated may be different.
