10 Mbs ADSL checker

/sigh...Seems like my exchange has now been downgraded to max 4mbps from 10 mbps, based on the new link

message: "exchange supports ADSLMaximum speed available in your area: 4096kbps"

I just checked my exchange and it said 4 meg to . but i know it has IMAX capable of 10 meg so it is not correct

I've said this multiple times...

You okes need to realize that exchanges have a number of dslams. 4 of them might be ATM and 4 of them might be Ethernet.

When you run your query it doesn't check per dslam.

Telkom are retarded. If they have 2 dslams that are Ethernet and the other 6 are ATM it will still tell you that you have 10mb capable line.

Call them and ask what dslam you on, it's a lot easier!!!! :)

OK sorry for my ignorance. What do I ask them exactly? "What dslam is my tel number on?" And what answer should I expect for a 4Mbps vs 10 Mbps line?

call and give them your number

"please tell me what kind of DSLAM I am on? Is it ATM or Ethernet??"

If they dont know what you talking about, hang-up, an call back till you reach someone who actually knows something :)

ATM = 4mbps and slower

Ethernet = 10mbps and higher

1) Telkom's current next generation network cannot even provide you with a stable 4mbps ADSL line as it is, so don't allow yourself to put too much hope on a 10mbit line.

2) If you ask a call centre operator to tell you what DSLAM you are on, he will lapse into a deep coma on the spot due to technical-terms-overload. They have no idea what goes on inside an exchange.

I got owned like this too... one minute I had 10mb/s and the next I had about 6 and now back to 4.

:cry:

Even if you are on an IMAX DSLAM, it doesn't mean you will qualify for 10mbit.

The requirements are:
1. IMAX DSLAM - This is a DSLAM that syncs with ADSL2+ protocol instead of G.DMT
2. The IMAX DSLAM must have a metro ethernet uplink to the BRAS. ATM links are usually STM-1 so support up to ~60mbit/sec uplink capacity, where as the metro ethernet ones are STM-4 so ~600mbit/sec

I am in the same situation as you, I am on a IMAX DSLAM with a ATM uplink to the BRAS :(

So even though I sync with a SNR of 28, I am stuck on 4mbit/sec.

someone else who also knows whats going on :)

the uplink was 1gb when they were upgrading everything last year. then they decided to lower it to the same as ATM... which is totally retarded!

I've seen it with my own eyes

ok so I upgraded to 4Mbps from 1Mbps. But when I run a speedtest I get max 1 Mbps and the Internet conn drops intermittently.

Phones Telkom after 30min got thru, they then asked me to switchnoff routr and they reset my port, the asked me to switch router on again. I tested and still only get 1Mbps then they dropped my call conveniently.

What should I do,or ask them when I call again?

you are probably to far from the exchange
do you know how far you are from the exchange ??
and when you sync do you get dsl2 ??
most of the people in the call centers have no idea what they are doing and some are contractors
Have you tried a different router ??

Ok i had to downgrade back to 1mbps. Line now stable again.
Not sure how far from exchange I am, Telkom couldnt tell me either, but my line attenuation is 63.5 so I must be either far away or have ****ty copper. Have asked them to checked

With the previous version it said 10mbps while this version says 4mbps. I just checked my modem which used to be 4096 ds and 512 us with G.DMT, it is now 4092 ds and 503 us while the modulation is now ADSL_2plus.

So perhaps I am now also in the case of an upgraded DSLAM but still ATM backhaul?
