So just for a bit of a laugh ill tell you a story that is currently happening to me daily.

My sister-in-law is preggers with her first baby. She is due on like the 2nd of March, but is having a scheduled C-section next week. The whole way through this preganancy she has been ahead on her actual term status. IE when she was 24 weeks she thought she was 6 months pregnant already.
At first I simply thought that it was the miss-understanding that a month actually has 4.3333 weeks in it not 4. So I explain to her that 24 weeks is in fact 5 1/2 months pregnant not 6. She proceeded to tell me that her doctor told her that full term is actually 10 months not 9 months. Like we had all gotten it wrong in the first place and this was some new discovery in science or something.

So I calmly start explaining to her that 9 months is the full term, its been like that for centuries. 9 months is 39 weeks I say. As for every 3 months you add a week extra to the tally. So 13 is 3 months, 26 is 6 and 39 is 9. Then she says, no full term is 40 weeks. I say cool. 40 weeks is only one week extra anyway. 40 weeks is a nice round number to tell people so that it doesn't confuse them with the complicated 39. Which is 9 months. Humans like whole rounded numbers afterall, things we can divide by 2's, 5's, and 10's Especially 10's.
She says no full term is 40 weeks, 10 months.:wtf: I proceed to tell her that if there are 4 weeks in a month and 40 weeks are 10 months. But we have 52 weeks in a year. Where did the 13th month go? As you can imagine by this time I am either becoming quite condescending, or simply laughing out of frustration at her not comprehending this simple concept.

Eventually my wife gave me the ceremonial kick under the table to tell me to stop. You see my sister in law can become quite flustered when she is provided with new information. She is not just gullible, she is zealously gullible of the first concept she learns, and it takes all of your power and google savy to show her the light. Dont get me wrong, I love her to bits and she is as sweet as anything, but damn she can be frustrating.

This was back 3 months ago, now she is 8.5 months pregnant or 37 weeks and she is adamant that she is 9 months and 3 weeks pregnant (I am even more confused how that math works now but have not plucked up the courage to ask, im afraid of the answer).

I tried to educate her to prevent the embarasment of telling people when they ask, that she is 9 months and 2 weeks pregnant. Then they say, shooo weeee you are overdue hey? Then she replies with no, still 2 weeks to go until full term. Then they do the smile and wave while they back away slowly. Too late for that though. She went to pre-natal classes, and even the midwife there gave up on trying to correct her knowledge.

Anyway, just thought it was worth a bit of a laugh. I never would have thought that I could meet a 26 year old that finished not only matric, but A levels, and could fail so hard at comprehending something this simple.

The funniest part is that her husband thinks the same thing... And he is actually quite sharp sometimes... I think its just to appease her. It took and takes all of my willpower every day to not scream at her to get her to understand. I hate having ill-informed people around me.
Happily my wife got the brains and common sense out of the 2, or else, well she wouldn't be my wife.

Anyway, would anyone else have handled it differently? Anyone out there that also believes this 10 month thing? If so, why? Maybe its just some new terminology going around that my s-i-l is just not that great at explaining? I hope for their baby's sake that it is.

Months vary in lengths, weeks do not. The typical gestation period from conception to birth is 38 weeks [though the WHO defines "normal" as between 37 and 42 weeks].

The doctor might have confused her if he mentioned that the time period from her last normal period is usually 40 weeks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pregnancy

I don't know why but I've noticed that IQ tends to take a hit when a woman becomes pregnant. :o

Oh yes, that I totally get. This confusion that you can be either anything from 3 to 6 weeks pregnant in the beginning because they dont know when the exact conception date was (You could either have concieved straight after your last period or just before your next one was about to start, leaving a gap of around 3 weeks of uncertainty at first), so they simply measure it from the last period. But as the baby grows, they begin to more acurately measure the due date. Once they have the due date they reverse engineer the conception date to around 40 weeks before the due date. As the average between 37 and 42. Then they start telling you that you are about X weeks pregnant this all happens early in the pregnancy, when the featus starts showing up visibly on the scans. I still dont see how she could convolute it to her being 9 months and 3 weeks pregnant next week when she has her C-section at 39 weeks.

As far as the IQ thing goes, 100% agree. I think its because baby is taking up all their vitamins that promote brain function?

@SoulTax As a father of three kids (with two seperate wives), all I can say is that you do not mess with this domain. Its the sole domain of women and any male interferance is not unwelcome but will result in lonley nights on couch.

And this domain also extends to the first, actually then entire life of the new born. They have the only say in the issue. If my wife says the little one is 6 mths old, then she is 6 mths old and not 6 mths 2 weeks according to my calendar.

haha, I will try my best to butt out. My wife is not crazy right now and seems to defer to me for most things, even baby related. Although I have seen sugary sweet women turn into wild beasts after their first. When it comes to knowing what is best for them :) . I hope my wife avoids that, only time will tell I guess. But for my sister in law, I guess the overwhelming consensus is that I should not mess with it. I will just make sure my nephew knows the truth when he grows up :) that he mustn't trust his parents' mathematical abilities. :D

The problem with pregnant women is that the brains go out the window because their systems are too busy gestating your spawn. They WILL forget stuff. They WILL do crazy things that make you go WTF? Remember, when they're preggers, the woman you know and love goes away, and this... .... .... incubator ... takes her place for a few months. It's a fact of life. :p
