100Mbps Telkom FTTH project

Wow, those two people must be thrilled! Two people out of a population of 50 Million. I don't even want to calculate that percentage!

Bump.

Interesting that they didn't mention Durban in the article. I have a friend who's had the fibre installed this week and the equipment is due Monday - The complex he stays in is part of the trial and they didn't charge him any installation costs!

What price do you expect to pay to Telkom for:
-Residential contented 100mbps (about 100:1)
-SME Business contended 100mbps (about 40:1)
-Corporate contended 100mbps (about 10:1)

People, South Africa is a 3rd world country and you will not see 100mbps lines uncapped soon (hoping for it though)....on the other hand I have recently moved to the Netherlands and really enjoying my 100mbps uncapped line from UPC. It feels totally unreal when downloading something and you see 9/10mb per second speeds! http://www.speedtest.net/result/2789581067.png

That line isn't uncapped either, not by the average SA geek's standards anyway, and they don't market it as uncapped.

Fair usage policies still apply, IE if you are going to max out your line 24/7 they will reign you in.

Oh and you can't open the piratebay.org website. lawl.

La Palma Terraces - Its next to Umhlanga Rocks Drive (Opposite side of the road to the Sunnindale Centre)

Apparently not all the units were selected for the trial - but like 10 of them were...

You will get a 100mbps line with a 1GB cap....

Also who cares??? Telkom can't even provide 4mbps stable connections in South Africa,

Yes I would love a 100mbps connection, Telkom might have a whole 2 people by 2020 connected to 100mbps......

+1, but a stable 4 MB line will probably do......let's take this step by step Telkom!

Pretty much what I am getting with my (non Telkom) fibre line except that I can open piratebay etc but cannot download torrentz (at any reasonable speed). I am using direct downloads instead and get full speed with that.

WHAT is wrong with everyone ?
When Telkom bump your speeds up again FOR FREE ( will be happening again soon )
I suppose you will ALL complain again and say the FREE 4Mb you got is NOT good enough and you NEED 10Mb ?
Bunch of useless moaners.

NOW
Telkom -- please come and trial 100Mb at MY complex :D

What is wrong with me is that my line broke A WEEK AGO and Telkom still hasent fixed it. What is wrong with me is that when i asked why it took so long they told me they were busy, but meanwhile mr telkom worker was sleeping in his bakkie down the street. What is wrong with me is when I told Telkom its costing me a bundle in 3G costs they told me it was my problem not theirs. So in other words screw them. If I had a other option I would gladly choose it. I mean hell I live behind woodhill for peet sakes and cant get more than 4mbps on a good day, USELESS.

This is all good and well
BUT

Exchanges are already congested, there is NOT ENOUGH BANDWIDTH to SERVICE NORMAL ADSL.

That needs to be fixed first.

Good point. I've been on 10 mbit fibre for over a year now and it's not all it's spliced up to be. Sure the latency is awesome (5ms ping on speedtest) but the bottleneck is with your ISP. I've had any number of problems with my ISP getting consistent 10 mbit performance. The problems have ranged from contention ratio, to Seacom being down, to router overheating, to slowness on DNS resolution, to local network and exchange issues in the server room supplying the estate I am on. However, with all of these problems, I can say I've had more than 80% full speed usage over the total usage period. When it works, it's a dream. 20ms pings to international CoD servers anyone? Consistent 1 megabyte per second downloads from newsgroups...

They must give us(Entry level) 4mb lines, uncapped, unshaped for R400, including line rental, ADSL rental and data. I know some people will rape it for the first few months but then it will settle. All(most) exchanges are now on fiber, so there should not be any congestion.
I can guarantee that the customer base will grow rapidly. Economies of scale then will make sure it's sustainable.
Enough said.
