1024k feedback / speed-test

Hey sybawoods,

Please could you tell me what upload speed you get? I know it says 256k but you never know.

I'm getting 408kbps upload when I FTP to my web-site, but I've always had greater than 256k upload speed, so I wouldn't see it as a "feature" of the 1024 package.

Edit: and for those who haven't seen their upgrades come through yet, I know it may be obvious, but you do know that you will have to re-synch your line (i.e. reset your modem) in order to see the upgrade, right?

So, for those using 1024, is it worth it? P2P downloads better? Gaming better?

I can't imagine browsing on 1024 would be significantly better than 512k?

Browsing is most definitely better on sites (mostly overseas) that have plenty of pictures, animations etc on their front page e.g. navigating to cnn.com and clicking on a streaming video news insert is a breeze - can only imagine how nice it must be with an 8meg connection.

I don't really use p2p, but plenty of downloads from http://www.mp3search.ru/ and easynews.com, and the downloads max out at 900kbps, so that helps.

Haven't tested it on gaming yet, but I don't expect it to be any different than 512kb for gaming.

Here is a question, Before telkom did that "upgrade" at the dslams or changed our settings or wateva they did, I could game locally and be downloading @ 40k, with 1024 will I once again be able to do this?

Depends on the game, and how you're downloading. If you're downloading from a fast server that will let you download at the full 1meg, and you're using a bandwidth intensive game, your pings will shoot through the roof if you're lucky enough to sustain a connection.

If you're using p2p software, or a download manager like getright, you can throttle your downloads to say 700kbps, and leave the rest for your game and you should be ok.

On the other hand, if you're downloading from a slow server that doesn't let you max your download, you can game happily.

no, you don't understand, i know all of that, before I use to max my downloads while playing with no lag at all,
Game : warcraft (local server)
Download : torrents (international server)

This is what my router says:
DSL Speed
384 Kbps Upstream,
640 Kbps Downstream

Before if use to say something like

DSL Speed
1000 Kbps Upstream,
2000 Kbps Downstream

I ordered the they it came available, Still nothing yet. Called 0800375375. IT IS NOT EVEN LOGGED Thus no order. Must redo tommorrow. I will call Durban for instant service this Telkom call centres is as usual USELESS. take note Telkom spies YOU are all useless

RPM Please dont let telkom have my info. They will probably limmit my bandwith just to pee me off more

If only Telcom in general were not so greedy we would have had a FNO and not wished for a SNO

Does FNO stand for FREE network operator? :D

I spoke to IS today, and according to them you won't get the 1024 speed on their uncapped solution. That Sucks!!!!

How do I upgrade???

Hi,

we've got BusinessDSL512 at work and want to upgrade to BusinessDSL1024 ... is there a special number I need to contact? And why do I have to fax anyone (Telkom has never received or responded to my faxes before) :( I've tried 10217 and they are even more useless than the rest!!!!

Any help?

That is really annoying! Why can't they just be punctuial!? (spelling) - They should get fined!

What are the specs on this package? Is it only the 512 that becomes a 1024? Do the 'guaranteed' bandwidth of 16k go up as well?

More importantly, will I still have ping times of 1000+ms to the Telkom hub in London at midnight on a Monday morning? (yes this happened last night  )

I looked at that mp3search url - that is SICK! You have to PAY for downloads? Euuwwww !! That is just wrong. :P

Lol :D - I get what you're saying, but I really don't mind paying US10c (65c ZAR) / song, getting exactly what I need without annoying popups, or having to navigate TELKOM's port shaping, or downloading a poor quality (or incorrectly named) version of some popular file. Ditto for easynews.com - I pay R60 p/m and get anything I need via an http download at 1 meg/s.

And yeah I know there are other ways, but they are usually much slower, unreliable, and i.m.h.o., not worth the risk.

You should try CNN on a 100mbps line.. ;) We have a 100mbps link to the same NAP as CNN in Atlanta.

i would look at your contract there... did they specify that u can ONLY use 512kb worth of bandwidth? the account is "uncapped" regardless? correct?

Sigh - just got off the phone call with telkom and now I have to wait for them to come out and test my line before they'll give me 1024 - correction upgrade to 1024 as I already have 512.

Now when they came the first time they tested after installling the line they said I'd be able to sustain 6-8mbs! Last I checked 1mbs fell below that ceiling!
