1080p vs 720p

I think it all depends on personal preference, I had the choice between a full HD 40" and a 720p 50". I went for the 50" and haven't regretted it. I play xbox360, HD files from my laptop and watch upscaled dvds (a waste of time). I honestly couldn't tell you the difference between a 1080p and 720p unless they were next to each other.

In terms of broadcast, no plans for 1080p broadcast anytime soon, so if you're more of a TV watcher, forget the 1080p and go for size! (also depends on your room size though)

Here is another good 720p vs 1080p guide.. Basically it depends on the size of the screen and the distance you sit from it. The general rule of thumb seems to be if you have anything under a 42 inch screen, it really isn't going to make much of a difference - if any, regardless of how close you sit.

so for a small room, a 720 would be sufficient, if i understood everyone's comments?

also for lcd, is the higher the contrast ratio the better ie 1:15,000 better than 1:1000

Depends what you mean by small. In a single couch environment, you need to be somewhere around 2.4m from the screen to gain the full benefits of 1080p from a 50" screen.
