Is it true that once you exceed 10Gb (from next month) on the local bandwidth, Telkom kills certain services like VPN? Apparently its been at 20Gb for some time now but this will be brought down to 10Gb next month (May). [:(]
If anybody knows anything about this pleeez can you explain to me what services are being cut and why these services in particular.

thx

Hi,

I think Telkom might do it as people have found ways to run local VPN's via ADSL 512k VPN ADSL (R 800 per month) normal diginet leased line vpn( 512K R 5500 per month) Telkom are tyring to protect there intrests in both area's

Mmm...the thing I don't understand is, why does Telkom cut the VPN based on bandwidth used? How much do these VPNs really contribute to bandwidth usage?
It would make much more sense if Telkom cut everything except browsing when you went over 10 or 20 gigs. But everything else works except the VPN services. I really don't get it. There must be something more to it.

nope

mmm...so what then Kobie? 'cause my dad uses vpn to link to his work from home. Now the network dude is saying that we mustn't exceed 10Gb from next month or my dad won't be able to connect to work from home.
Is he speakin' bulldust? [8D]

There are hundreds of VPN solutions. Windows's VPN services uses a fixed port, but I'm pretty sure that can be changed with some twiddling, which means Telkom won't be able to kill it.

Alternatively using tools such as OpenVPN allows you to run a VPN on just about any bloody port you want, so this is really ridiculous.

My source also thinks that the existing ADSL accounts will be converted to the 10GB cap. I don't think that changing ports is going to help though [:p]

Nitroflea: by nope i meant, no there is no existing 20gb local limit at the moment

mmm, k.
I'd love to know when Telkom was gonna start telling ppl about this.[}:)]
Well, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.[?]
thx all

We've been using 120GB each month on our ADSL connection, plus I'm using a always-connected VPN, and I've never been "cut-off" after 20 Gigs. The whole point of this would be totally rediculous, since telkom claim's that THEY have enough local bandwidth, just not international. So by routing through someone else for international bandwidth, what's their problem?
No: I think this is crap, I don't think they would have a SECOND counter just to cut off services like VPN.
And by the way, with what company can you get a 128 or 256k VPN solution?
