Despite the fact that the Telkom 10mbps speed checker stating otherwise my exchange does in fact support 10mbps.

This has been confirmed by about 5 sales staff and adsl support staff today.
http://www.broadbandstats.co.za also tells me that my exchange supports 10mbps

This has also been denied by 1 adsl technical support staff members.

How do i know what dslam i'm on and if it supports 10mb
There is one 1.5km down the road from me which i guess is my dslam? Its on the way to my exchange which is a further 2km away.

So, here is my problem:

1. Technical support can't change the profile
2. Sales can't change the profile
3. Internet support can't change the profile.
4. They keep transferring me to different departments with none seeming to know what to do.

So I am guessing some body knows my question?
Who can change the profile and how do I get to that person or department??
Do i need to get the technician out?

Side note, any one in Ridge Road, Umhlanga getting 10mbps??

Green&blue box != DSLAM

The green&blue boxes are SDC's(Street Distribution Cabinets)

My guess is that while your exchange does support 10Mb you're still connected to an older DSLAM that doesn't, you can try to get them to swap you over to a DSLAM that supports 10Mb, but good luck with that. It took me 5 months of phoning them at least once a week to get them to do it.

so where the dslam is at the exchange itself then?

What most people dont know either, is that usually there are more than one dslam, new users get added to the newer dslams, which supports 10mbit.

So in my area, there are 8 dslams, I am on dslam #5 which supports 10mbit, while I know dslam #4 which my previous line was on, doesn't.

The requirements for 10mbit is as follow:
1. ADSL2+ DSLAM (if you sync with G.DMT you can't get it) ADSL2+ DSLAMs are called IMAX DSLAMs
2. Metro-Ethernet backhaul. Even if you are on a IMAX DSLAM, if the backhaul is ATM Telkom's interface will refuse to set you higher than 4mbit.
3. You obviously need very good sync stats, I'd sat a downstream attenuation of 27 or less. This means at 4mbit you sync with a SNR of at least 25 if not more.

So, point #1 you can check yourself by looking at your modem's sync stats. Point #2 you have to get in contact with the correct person at Telkom, but their ADSL department should be able to tell you. I do know if your line is with a ISP other than Telkom, that ISP accounts usually don't have access to point #2's information.

So even if Telkom's 10mbit checker says you can get 10mbit, its not always accurate, it is usually only based on point #2's information. Check point #1 yourself, that will tell you.

The above post is mostly correct if you sync ADSL2+ then you are on IMAX which is 10meg capable .
what area in durbs are you in ??

Haha, funny you are :P

I used to be on a IMAX DSLAM with ATM backhaul, Telkom refused to give me 10mbit. Only after they upgrade the backhaul to metro-ethernet was I able to get 10mbit.

Seaview ..you near the ridge or at the bottom they have an exchange right next to east coast house and one in umhlanga by the post office but plenty UMCs in those areas

At the bottom,,I know for a fact that I'm on the la Lucia exchange, which i think is right next to the mall.

@OP: is there quite a bit of activity in your area? Bakkies and trucks building networks? New "street boxes" being built, etc.?

IIRC your area is one of the pilot areas for the new MSAN rollout - 20/40Mbps services.

Yes la lucia exchange is by the mall rite next to the off ramp from the freeway .
Not part of the MSAN rollout - 20/40Mbps services.
That is in Durban north and can only be fitted on IP switches.

But will it does support 10mb?

just apply for 10 meg and see what happens .
Sales staff basically know nothing about ADSL they will just sprout what the system tells them.
If you are on the old DSLAM (Gdmt) they will have to change you on to the IMAX for 10 meg .
Do you have ADSL and when your modem syncs does it sync Gdmt or ADSL2+ the latter is IMAX.

I have the same modem and i cant see if it is Gdmt or adsl2 either.
But i have it on good authority that an upgrade in speeds is about to happen so if you can hold on a while you should have a free upgrade but i dont think it will be from 4 meg to 10 meg .
