Hi

I recently had a 4mbps ADSL line installed and was told by the Telkom technician that I can upgrade to a 10mbps without any problems. A week after placing the order for the upgrade Telkom called and said that the max speed the line can sync at is 6mbps.
This is my current status on my line.

SNR Margin(dB) - 183 (dB Down) 120(dB Up)
Attenuation(dB) - 290 ( Down) 185(dB Up)
Attainable Rate (Kbps) - 10816(Down) 1128(Up)
Rate (Kbps) - 6144(Down) 640(Up)

I don't know much about noise ratios etc is 6mbps really the fastest this line should sync at?
Thanks

Your router says otherwise, tell them to try 10 and that you will call them if the service degrades.

I just got off the phone with the technical department, I was told that the port profile can only handle 6Mbps and it would need to be escalated to a technician.

You should be able to sync at a higher speed.

Call Telkom on 10210 and ask the call centre person to change your adsl speed profile to 10Mbit, if it is not stable call back and ask them to change it to 8Mbit.

I am sure 8Mbit should be stable.

This usually means that your exchange doesn't support adsl2+ and you're stuck on d.gmt. Yes I know technically it the standardcan go to 8mb/s, but Telkom limits it to 6mb/s in ZA.

It could be that 8Mb and 10Mb options are not available for his port profile, telkom sometimes removes the higher speed options from the port profiles if the exchange gives to much issues or is getting close to being congested.
If they assign a tech to look at it there might just be a chance they will add the 8Mb option back and activate it for him.

Yeah, only saw his 2nd post after I had already posted... Decided to leave my response there anyways :)

Contact Telkom's social media team. They should be able to sort you out.

I have nearly the same stats and the techie said 4Mbps is the only stable profile but the area is 10Mbps enabled and I did order 10Mbps. I got the common line from the techie "You are too far away from the exchange".

Down Up
SNR Margin (dB): 191 120
Attenuation (dB): 310 195
Output Power (dBm): 79 26
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 10848 1112
Rate (Kbps): 4096 512

I think I am going to give telkom a call and ask them to bump up to 6Mbps, if it is stable I will try 8Mbps and so on.

SNR of 19.1dB - you still have room to play with. Unless the limiting factor is Telkom's equipment as opposed to the actual line and line stats.

Just a quick update, I contacted the Telkom Social Media team and they got everything sorted, just a problem with the modulation settings, and am now syncing at 10mbps :)

Its good to know that Telkom has got some knowledgeable and helpful representation here.
Drop them a PM if you need any assistance.
Thanks again guys.
