I am very proud to announce that I just got my line upgraded to 10Mbps! And because I am so close to the exchange, this is my link speed:

10015 kbps
1023 kbps

Speedtest not looking bad either:

YAY! Enjoy it while it lasts.
Don't wanna rain on your parade, I was a happy camper too ... for one week. Then suddenly speed and latency dropped to values even lower than before the upgrade. Also experience intermittend drops that bring online games to a suddden stop and freezing my screen.
Turns out, there is only one hispeed Dslam at our exchange (Table View 9/CPT), although it's suppposed to be the fastest growing region in SA with a high demand of fast internet access. I just had an techie at my house and he told me now all hispeed customers are cramped onto only one dslam and that gives a lot of trouble. Eventhough they downgraded my speed to 5 MB I still have those connectivity probs. This is worse than before they bumped us up. :(

Area? Phone number?

Thanks for the warning. Hopefully the same doesn't happen to me, but I'll be posting if it does happen.

Lucky bugger!

Got our line upgraded from 384K to "4Mbit" this morning...
The line was trying to sync at the low 8xxx kbps and high 7xxx kbps...
Had to call Telkom and ask them to lower the profile to 7Mbit, apparently that was unstable and we had to settle for 6Mbit.

Stay in Bryanston, not sure about the phone number. I am pretty sure I am close to the exchange though... I guess not close enough.

How many people are on lines greater than 4Mbit? Been a while since I have checked out mybb.

Not sure how many there are yet, but I'm certain its picking up more momentum. 10mb seems stable for me, was downloading at just under 9mbps tonight! That's a very fast way to watch your cap go...

what number do you call?
I've tried 0800375375 They tell me to call 10219. Grrrrrrrrrr.
When I finally got through at 5pm the person said hello, then hung up.
Telkom need to be destroyed.

Does their availability checker work?
It still says its not available in my area. Its been months!

Just used the 10Mbps DSL checker... and.... Your exchange supports up to 10Mbps fastest ADSL. The provision of such a service is subject to port availability, distance, copper quality and line sync speed limitations.

I'm still syncing at 4Mbps, whose kneecaps do I need to pop, to get upped?

Okay, for all of you that still have questions on how to upgrade your line - if the availability checker says the following "Your exchange supports up to 10Mbps fastest ADSL. The provision of such a service is subject to port availability, distance, copper quality and line sync speed limitations." Phone 0800375375 and ask the operator to upgrade your line from 4Mbps to 10Mbps. If you are lucky enough to live close enough to the exchange, you should be able to get 10Mbps. The operator should be able to tell you if you are "synching" at 10Mbps or not. The next options are 8Mbps, 6Mbps or 4Mbps.

That is how I got my line upgraded...... ;)

Ok... so after an hour and a half being passed around like a...nevermind... I'm now told that while my area is upgraded I need to wait for Telkom to upgrade me. I'm exhausted and suddenly satisfied with my 4Mbps line!

Oy...

A lot of the telkom operators there are retarded. 70% of the time I've called they say "no we don't upgrade lines, we only check for problems. you must phone sales at 10219"
I think when that happens you should basically hang up and call again and hope for a different operator. Only problem is its like 10 mins of suffering each time.

I heard the availability checker info can be up to 2 weeks old.

Yeah, I asked most of them to upgrade me to 4meg line and they said my exchange only support 512kb. Kept phoning and the one consultant said he will put through the order so that Telkom can do a feasibility check to see if my line supported 4meg. Got home and now I got 8meg. Went to the telkom shop and they were even worse.
From what I gather though is that if the exchange is ready to hold the 10meg line for all the current users, all the 4meg will be upgraded to 8/10meg automatically.

0800375375 only deals with ADSL e.g. if the line is not synchronizing
10215 deals with internet faults e.g. help you to set up your internet
