Lol, now you are just repeating yourself for Datura's benefit. :p

Let's let him decide!

Meh... Bethesda's popularity and that they somehow are lauded as one of the "greatest developers" is a constant thorn in my eye. They have not made one truly great game. All of their games just show off one fanciful notion while succumbing to utter mediocrity.

Developing games is an art form; if you can't paint a world (especially an RPG) with life, emotion and depth then all you're doing is putting an engine together, a bunch of scripted NPCs every here and there, abusing the same three voice artists for all those NPCs and then letting the poor schmuck daft enough to buy your games entertain himself like a child with a street carpet and toy cars. Oh wait, that's every "RPG" ever developed by Bethesda described to the letter.

Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Cheap easy-to-understand and pretty-to-look-at rubbish sells. It's a damn shame, but it's true.

Yep! Subjective!

*edit*

Which is precisely why I don't obsessively berate people for enjoying Dragon Age. :p

I think the reason you don't berate people for enjoying Dragon Age is because you would be laughed at for berating a classic. Berating Oblivion is sort of like berating a hideous troll with a zit on its nose you only really notice when you get close to it, creating the opportunity as well for you to notice that it's also wearing a tiara, a toupee, braces and that someone has drawn squiggles on its face, presumably while it was asleep.

Note also that I said Oblivion.

The rest were all mediocre, but none took the cake as well as Oblivion and Fallout 3.

I was talking about Morrowind, also a highly esteemed classic!

Meh.

I think I just view RPGs from a different angle - to me it's at its worst a slightly more involving means of conveying a story than reading a book would be. From that perspective I found even Fallout 3 very enjoyable, as it fleshed out a helluva lot about the Fallout universe that an isometric game just never could. As a game it might not have been fantastic, but as part of the Fallout narrative I found a lot to take pleasure from.

Perhaps because I start these games from a slightly different point of departure, I am more forgiving towards the odd bug or the not-so-odd failing of a game's engine. Because, for every NPC that says something utterly daft in a voice I heard not 5 minutes ago in a town on the other side of the map, there might just be something like this around the next corner:

** New Vegas Spoiler **
Youtube - the story of Vault 21

Perhaps this is part of the reason why I don't find rather sparsely populated worlds at all arduous to navigate. To me the sights and sounds, perhaps especially when I can take them in without having 73 blood-thirsty whatsits rushing towards me intent on ripping my character's frontal cortex out his right ear, only ever add to a world I will never physically experience. I don't mind that one bit.

Morrowind is THE most BEAUTIFUL game I have ever played.

It has plenty of depth, look at the environment, the creatures, the races, the runes.

OMW it's brilliant.

Eish Ly I see you hate Bethesda products. So you hated Oblvion and Fallout? Those were brilliant RPG's! Seriously do you even like RPG's?

What a daft question. My favourite games off the top of my head: Planescape, Arcanum, Fallout (1, 2, NV), Baldur's Gate, Gothic (1, 2, 3), Dragon Age, Mass Effect (1 & 2), Neverwinter Nights (1), Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines, Knights of the Old Republic (1 & 2). I'm pretty sure I'll think of a couple more later on but you're seeing the pattern here yet? I'll summarise it for you: they're all RPGs and they are all renowned for their story lines, plots and utter immersion.

I could also list some of my favourite JRPGs, if you like? I could also list games from other genres if you prefer, also with phenomenal story lines but none of them grab at my heart the way (C)RPGs do.

What about you? You seem interested in sharing résumés.

Ask copa, I've detailed my reasons for my absolute dislike of Bethesda's "RPGs" numerous times--it's not difficult and you don't even have to look hard to spot the problems.

I just don't like them. They're nothing more than glorified steaming mounds of bird droppings. They're playable and that's about all anyone can possibly say about them that's true. But "great?" Hell, even "good" is stretching the poor word to its limits.

Shut up :p

Anyway, I can't believe I forgot Nox, The Witcher, Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity... Oh crap, and Pool of Radiance... And Temple of Elemental Evil...

*sigh* I can't bloody remember them all in an instant

And Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader

Allow me to elaborate: What is the point of an RPG without palpable choices, rewards and consequences? What is the point of a role-playing game where your actions do not affect the outcome of the game?

The word is linear.

Every last one of Bethesda's "RPGs" were linear.

A world like Oblivion or Morrowind and all the good your existence in the world does (this is sarcasm) is only one short step away from a hack-and-slash game like Titan Quest, Diablo, etc.

Dude, not here to "compare resumes" just saying the Fallout 3 and Oblivion were awesome games!
I loved Fallout more than Oblivion. Oblivion was cool in the beginning but got a bit bored after a while. Fallout 3 and New Vegas loved a lot. Loved the VATS system and the mutants and all. Obviously they had the glitches and bugs and ish but most games have that.

Thoughts on Fable?

If you derived some satisfaction from them then, as copa would say, more power to you.

I can't. It's impossible. They are bland, lifeless, predictable and have about as much emotional substance as a toenail clipping.

The only bugs that have ever bugged me (lulz) are game-breaking ones.

Thoughts on Fable?

Fable 1 is a beautiful game that I fell in love with. It's not a serious game, however, nor does it profess to be one and that is its charm. I haven't played Fable 2 or 3, but I have 3 on pre-order for PC.

Yeah Ly I see this going nowhere you cant force someone to like something they dont like.
