Hi guys,
I have one of the big wooden computer desks, where the tower is supposed to sit inside an enclosed area. It is open in the front, but partially closed at the back. At the moment the PC is sitting outside the desk, and my idle temps are ± 48°C.
I have in the mean time ordered a "Zalman CNPS9700 LED CPU Cooler" to help with the cooling, but I am sure if I put the PC back into the enclosure, I will STLL have a temp problem, even with the Zalman.

What I would like to know, would it be possible to cut a hole in the rear of the desk, mount a 120cm fan, and solder a USB cable to the fan. Does USB supply enough voltage to run a 120cm fan?
An alternative I guess, is to use a 220v fan, but where can I get a 120 - 150cm AC fan?

USB supplies 5V at a few hundred milliamps. This is DC. This means that, at worst, you could get 500mW, and at ABSOLUTE best you could get 5W. But you won't get anywhere near the absolute best. If you can find a fan that can run off those specs, then it'll work. You might also look into using multiple USB ports to share the load. This will help tremendously. Or use an externally-powered USB hub. This might work (but check specs on them) as they usually have capacity to supply larger currents.

If you are not sure that the port(s) can supply enough current, STOP! THINK! One can easily blow the USB ports on your computer (I've done it a few times, heh)

OK, my new Zalman CNPS9700 cooler arrived... geez is the think heavy, must be close on a kilo. I am worried whether my MB will be able to take the extra weight... :D

I see it comes with some ZM-STG1 thermal grease, anyone have some experience with this stuff? Is it any good, or should I rather just use some AS-5?

I think he meant 120mm! :D These are available in 220V AC versions, used faily widely in industrial cooling applications, so you should find these at typical electrical distributors such as here

haha, yeah, was meant to be 12cm... I only work in mm's, so I got a bit confused there... :D

kayvee, thanks, but after a bit of thought I think I am rather gonna get a fan cable extension, and plug a fan into a motherboard fan header. Atleast the external fan will be off if the PC is off. I want to see what my temps will be like after I install the Zalman, otherwise I will look at one of these big boys... (upto 60cfm)
