Got my 128k SIM card delivered yesterday by courier. Called VM today to do the official SIM swap at lunch time, and somehow I'm still getting "Unregistered SIM" messages from my phone when it should only take 30minutes according to the technical guy I spoke to.

Went to "Available Networks" and I can see Cell-C, Vodacom and MTN. Where is VM??

Any help guys???

VM won't show up. They run on cell c network. Phone them again. Maybe the SIM swap did not go thru.

Checked my SIM out just now and it is working in my phone!! It was just a delay. Now to test it with my E620 card - MTN told me yesterday that I have used 550MB and my data bundle was only 350MB :(

Here I come, 50c/MB data...

Hopefully the SIM card is working on the Data Card. I am experiencing frequent disconnects in Cape Town, so do not be alarmed at this and verrrrrrry slooow speeds.

Got it! The SIM works in my data card! Had one disconnect after less than 2 minutes, but it seemed to stabilise after that. Will use this mostly for home internet access - fine for viewing emails etc.

Have used the settings in the sticky at the top of the page. The DNSs given are referred to as making GPRS connection possible. I want EDGE so I've left the DNS settings as "Dynamic" in the profile set on my data card. Is this the best option??

Now I've been trying to set up VM with my home PC. I used the Network Wizard after messing around for a while. MTN could be selected under "Service Providers" and did most of the work automatically. I've tried to follow the instructions on the site, but the network refuses to register me.

I can't find a place to set the APN. When I try the initialisation string suggested by Terencek, the modem does not recognise it. Where should I look in Windows XP to set the APN?

Thanks guys!

You don't set the APN in windows you set on your phone and then windows dials the corresponding connection. Install the modem drivers for your phone and then make a dialup connection using that as the modem. Then set the number to *99***1# if the Virgin settings are the first one in the list in your phone, 2 if they're second etc.

Thanks Syndyre. I've set up the phone as a modem and made a dial-up connection as suggested. MTN is "*99#", with fallback "*9***3#". So I've set VM to "*9***2#".

But the network still will not register me and drops connection with a PPP error?? Will post the exact error tonight.

Sometimes i get this error message.

Now, i have 2 ways that i connect to the internet...
1. through the software that came with my phone
2. through windows.

sometimes, strangley enough, if no.1 gets the ppp error then i try method no.2, it most times it connects. And vice-versa, if im connecting through method no.2, and get the ppp error, then i try connecting through method no.1, and most times it connects.

Having 2 different ways to connect to the net is better than one.

Thanks Boodles, now have a GRPS connection that works. Set up the primary connection as UMTS but I only have GPRS on my phone :o One day I must upgrade..

This exact problem is happening now for me.. i tried connecting through software that came to my phone, but i'm getting the pp error, so i've connected through windows....

Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated.

I get this error message when trying to connect to VM on GPRS using IRDA to a Siemens ME45.
The message pops up after showing "Registering your computer on the network"
Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated.

Can someone please help?
Dave

Try Boodles suggestion above. Check the forum stickynote to make sure your settings are correct.

It only connects when I use the connection set up using the phone software - had to delete the connections set up in Windows and then opened the phone software and set up a new Internet Connection there.
