I've ordered from iTalk Cellular at R460pm, which includes an IBM laptop
Which model laptop is it? I was thinking of getting one for my girlfriend, but iTalk gave me no details, just that it is an IBM laptop.

See this is another thing I've got a problem with, South Africa and it's poor standards, corporate to small scale. If they something goes wrong there's always an explanation why it isn't their fault. It was the suppliers, it's not my fault, blah blah blah. Companies, especially huge corporate entities should start to take responsibility for their whole business.
It's not a South African thing, it's a corporate thing.

Sometimes it is an excuse, sometimes it is an explanation.

Hi, its the IBM Thinkpad R52, 1.5 Celeron, 256Mb RAM, wireless & Bluetooth onboard, DVD/CD-RW combo, very similar specs to the HP6110 1.5cel. Your standard bottom end laptop, but still not bad at +- R3840 (R160*24) for the laptop + HSDPA modem.
Still waiting for the HSDPA modem to be delivered though, but waiting for VM's 128K sim anyway... would be cool, if (when) VM also get HSDPA/3G connection.

VM 128K Sims

From my view it seems a lot of us have come over to VM for data connection to the internet, since VM is so much cheaper with their prepaid data rate than even Vodacom/MTN/CellC bundles.
Only snag is, the current 64K VM sims don't wanna work with our (MTN/Vodacom) broadband Edge/3G/HSDPA modems.
The promise is that the 128K sim will sort those connection problems out.
So enter snag no 2, no 128K sims available yet :-(
But we're hoping and looking forward to the 'promised' mid-Aug availability....

anybody any news if this is still on track???

Yes, everything is still going according to plan. We will know as soon as the 128k sims are available.

VM128K sim

Great Piesang, Thanx for the upd8.
I have just received my MTN E620 HSDPA card... put in the VM sim, connecting... connecting....nnnno :-( failed
Well, I was told it wouldn't work :-)
I wonder what would happen if I update the card's software/firmware, looks like there's an update.... anybody tried that before?
I must admit that I'm kinda scared to try... se nou net it updates and then blocks any sims but MTN .... is that even possible? Still not gonna try, if it network locks I'll be screwed :-)
At least now I can still use Vodacom's HSDPA connection when I need a fast connection & time is of essence, as there is no MTN 3G/HSDPA here in Pta where I stay.... and for connecting to cheaper, still good enough EDGE for normal downloads & browsing, the VM sim in Sierra Wireless card works like a charm.
Hoping Virgin would give us 3G also one of these days?

CeeBee- Where did you get your Sierra Wireless card (850), MTN?

Does anyone know if Virgin will be releasing any other data cards other then the SE GC85 cards ?

d

No, the HSDPA card I have is the MTN E620 Huai card from MTN (iTalk).
The Sierra Wireless card I have is the MTN EDGE card (we got it at my co a few months ago, for mobile office users, I'm testing it, to see how it works with VM), it's the 775 aircard, not the 850 HSDPA card.

But with VM sim it works very well. Many times I get almost double the speed on VM, as opposed to the MTN Edge connection. (190kbps VM ave vs 80kbps MTN ave)
(suppose more users on MTN than CellC/VM in the area, but that worx for me) :)

I got the HSDPA card for myself, hoping that it should work with VM, and be ready if (when) VM goes 3G/HSDPA.
Just waiting to see if 128K sim will work.

But if you're looking for the Sierra Wireless 850 card, I know Nashua Mobile sells them. The Sierra Wireless cards (both EDGE 775 and HSDPA 850) are much nicer than the other cards available, like the MTN E620, or the VC card, they've got their own little antenna sticking out as well, but they are a bit more expensive.

Hi Piesang, or anybody, it's mid-August..... any news on ETA of those 128K sims?
I grow more and more g@tvol by the day with MTN's s-l-o-w (less than 80kbps) EDGE speed in my area (and that @ R2/Mb! :( ), so I keep having to use the Sierra Wireless card (on test, wouldnt like to give it up yet) with VM sim for a proper fast conn.
Would much rather use VM sim in my MTN E620 card, and keep it there.
:)

Hi there. No definate answer as yet. I'll keep you posted. I'm sure between me and BarryS you will definately get the info as soon as it is available.:D

thanx, I can't wait! Tonite is 1 of those again where I have to suppress swearing bigtime :-)
I've left the VM sim & Sierra WL card at the office, now I need to use the internet 4 kids school project, and the MTN "EDGE" (not!) connection goes no faster than ave 25kbps... how **** is that! What an exercise in frustration
It definately seems like MTNs service has gone to hell the past few weeks, I used to get about 100-120Kbps (still nowhere near VM's sub 200), and recently it's just grown worse.
Not even talking price, if MTN wants to keep people from defecting to VM in droves, this is definately not the way to go!

I phoned VM today, to get my credit card listed so I can recharge my account again, to connect to internet with VM, g@tvol of MTN's snailrace...
(great service VM! It's not often at all I phone up a helpdesk and speak to an actual person in less than a minute from dial!)
Anyway, I asked about ETA on 128K sims.... unfortunately still a delay :-(
