Rumor has it that 14 Wisps in th Cape Town region have been sent letters of demand from ICASA demanding that they cease opperations. Can anyone confirm this?
If you are opperating with a VANS, can ICASA still do this to a WISP?

Hi BAA and welcome

Please please please can the title of this tread be amended as it is just going to cause FUD

- no WISPS have been shut down by ICASA in the western cape
- some written warnings have been issued and a process in in place to address this...it does not appear that there will be any confiscations or closures where the WISP is using type-approved equipment, is not boosting and has a service licence

Dominic - are you involved with this process and in contact with the WISPs?

i believe they have got together to form WASP or some other acronym. i forget sorry. Is this working out? are the WISP starting to collaborate and work together with these issues as well as other issues such as interference of spectrum and so on? maybe someone else can shed some light on it.

It often think that WISP forget that their competition is not other WISPs but fixed line operators (read operator)

yes - Wireless Access Providers Association (WAPA) - see www.wapa.org.za

seems to be going fine for now and the warnings from ICASA are generally being viewed as positive in actually forcing people to get their act together and collaborate properly - this is being done in consultation with ICASA and to ensure that there is agreement on regulatory issues. WAPA seeks to work with ICASA to deal with interference issues and aggressively root out problematic practises

re your last sentence - on the basis of a census of current members the numbers with regard to clients, schools, clinics and large corporates serviced by WISPs are surprisingly large (certainly larger than sentech) and i am
positive about the future

Thanks for the info. I'm glad that things are going well. do you know if WAPA plan on "going national"? or if there is anything like it in JHB or DBN?

From one of the press releases: "will be meeting with ICASA representatives next week."
When will WAPA be meeting with ICASA or have the already?
are you personally directly involved with WAPA?

i cringe when i read my last sentence and the terrible typos.

I'm not sure whether to laugh, swear, spit or cry when you say things like that.
