been a vodacom subscriber for few almost 6years all excited got myself an mtn sim to test EDGE out on my 9300 communicator coz vcomm dont support edge.

been holding for MTN agents for 15minutes already!
can you believe that!

why cant they just enable data services by default
is there another way to enable it?
tried the site but for another 24 hours access is limited because it is a new registration!

"all our agents are currently busy, please stay on the line blah blah."
MTN guys please help

I assume you got a prepaid SIM. You can do all the required provisioning yourself by: Insert the SIM. When the phone is locked on the MTN network dial *123#. Then select the option for WAP and MMS provisioning and the settings will be sent to your phone. Save it to the phone and off you go.

Did this for a friend today as well. Held about 20 or so minutes. Once you get through they are gonna send you the exact same settings again. At least MTNSP (808) is not as bad wrt answering calls. Or rather thats my experience.

According to Vcom 26% of their network is EDGE enabled...

And now they are gonna start tests on HSDPA already! 2mbps to start! Imagine if Vodafone aquires more shares, what then! They will go insane with expansion and cost reduction!

And here we have a network that used to have a majority share in wireless data users. Now? They can't even answer their phones in an acceptable time frame, let alone respond to the cries of its consumers on MyADSL.

Please MTN, SEND US A RESPONSIVE AND KNOWLEDGEABLE REP!

Dam i thought the little pause was an agent....guess not

I tried calling 173 last night at 11:30 and waited for 20minutes again
no luck

after frustrating myself so much yesterday i decided to borrow a mates mtn contract phone and dial 808 and then got told eventually to call 173 coz they only can only assist me so far.

This is strange - I've set up several pre-paid MTN sims without having to phone the helpline.

Under normal conditions (and as explained by MTNBroadband while he was still around) the *123# thing, followed by 1 and 3 will both send you the settings, AND provision you for data on MTN's side. (You can also just type *123*13# to do the same faster).

The same for MMS. I generally just do a *123*11# which should set up the phone and privision you for both data and MMS.

I found that the MTNmms settings sent do not work properly with my Nokia 6630. It asks "Close connection to receive MMS?" when there is either no connection, or one that it had opened to receive the mms. If you press Yes it closes it and downloads nothing. After a while it asks the same again.

I tried another setting called "mtnmmsproxy" and all the mms's waiting came through. But there seems to be no difference between the two [settings] except for the name...

Anyone care to explain?

Cube, same here. The MMS settings that came with the simcard (MTN-MMS) doesn't work in my 6630. However, if I do the *123# thing, I get sent the settings for mtnmmsproxy - these work fine.

If you open the settings, select "Options" and then "Advanced Options", you will see the difference. The mtnmmsproxy settings use a proxy port of 8080, whereas the other settings use port 9201.

I've had weird experiences with the MMS and GPRS settings too. When I use the ones that are automatically downloaded (Nokia 6630) my phone sends out random MMS's to anything it likes. When I change the settings to the ones sent from MTN website, it works fine again. If anyone ever figures this out I'd like to know what the answer is.

You sure thats not some sort of malicious code (virus?) that you installed that maybe requires a spesific port setting to function properly?

Just grasping at air... Haven't ever heard of settings being the cause of anything like what you mentioned...

There was some talk about the Commwarrior virus on these specific phones. Maybe you've got it?

A friend of mine had the commwarrior virus on his phone. But the antivirus couldn't pick it up so I searched symantec.com for a guide on how to manually remove it, downloaded Fexplorer and went hunting myself. That did the job. But that virus isn't picky wrt settings, so I don't know...
