187 Cops arrested in July, August

A total of 187 police officers were arrested over two months this year for crimes including murder, rape, and robbery, the Sunday Times reported.

Between July 8 and August 26, 39 officers were arrested for murder, 14 for rape, 20 for robbery, and 23 for corruption.

The Sunday Times obtained these figures from a document issued by the police's human resources department earlier this month.

The arrests made during the two months also included nine officers for possession of drugs, and another nine for drunk driving. Eight were arrested for theft and five for assault. Two were arrested for hijacking.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Independent reported that the Gauteng government paid out almost R100 million in civil claims against the police for 2011 and 2012.

In 2012 the number of claims nearly doubled to 1427, from the 652 lodged in 2011.

The figures were given in a parliamentary reply by Gauteng community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko.

Mazibuko said the increase in claims was due to people's increased awareness of their constitutional rights and certain law firms specialising in such claims.

Wow! methinks we need a citizen force badly! I know some years this was available...needs to be revived!

CPF are really a toothless bunch of civilians, whose only job is to pass information from SAPS on how not to take the law into their own hands i.e. Not to create citizen forces or vigilantes. Government is scared shyt of this...!

Previously citizen forces upheld the law & assisted SAPS with patrol duties, manned road blocks & investigated any form of organised crime in their neighborhoods. They also served in emergency disasters & provided relief for: floods, riots, fire, manned traffic - help in national and big sports events and in many other areas. Most members were well trained in their chosen fields....I, myself in the 70's did a training stint at St Johns (Durban) for first aid, courtesy of the Citizen Forces....I could go on, but you get the idea.....

Interesting, so you don't think they work then? Security and emergency response companies are making lots of money carrying out those services too.

And what do you think will happen?

On the one hand they spend millions on a trial where the police were doing their job on the other hand a slap on the wrist for a bunch breaking the law.
 
I hope he get's the book thrown at him tho I don't understand why the owner of the shop is claiming it is going to ruin his business. A) Nobody of this business before it got free publicity in this incident and B) who would be on the side of the heavy handed cops?
 
The South African Police Service is the most efficient police force in the world. In 80% of all crimes they are already on the scene.
