Anyone know what the cheapest 19 inch rack server available costs?
Doesn't have to have high specs or loaded features, just basic components for linux tinkering and "weekend" projects. I'd like to go with a rack setup for space and expansion options in the future (if things pan out alright.)

From what it looks like, these puppies don't come cheap?

Chassis is normally around 2500 and motherboard similar for a 1U. You can get a chassis that carries a regular PC and is just rackable. Try contacting. Lightedge Technologies, they might have.

I bought this one from Sybaritic about a 2 years ago and filled it with standard pc parts; still going strong:

Just 2 things to watch for:
1) The chassis doesn't come with rails so I had to mount it on a shelf.
2) You can't use a standard CPU cooler; it's too high. So I ended up having to buy a 1U heatsink for the CPU.

Rather spend the extra cash and get an Intel rackmount chassis and server board (they customise the cooler for 1U). Or buy 2U.

Rack mounts are ABSURDLY over priced in South Africa. It's a 'eleet' market and you pay for it. I will NEVER buy a rackmount in SA.

Look overseas... You can pick up 1U Chassis for as little as US$50 if you know where to look...

The components inside are pretty much standard as to what is in every other PC, so don't let that bother you too much... (there are SOME contraints, but nothing too serious)

Cool thanks guys.
HillyBilly - Do you have the link to the 1U heatsink out of interest?
Did not see it on the sybaratic website under cpu cooling.

Hi ant101

I can't remember the exact CPU cooler I put in.. It was for a socket 478 motherboard (something i think you'll struggle to get these days). This one looks familiar:

Otherwise these should also work:
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=323_182&products_id=5639
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=323_182&products_id=5899
http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=323_182&products_id=3636

If you're going to get a new board, first get the cooler and then the motherboard.. i had to go through about 3 boards before I found one where the 'legs' on the cooler and the holes on the motherboard (for the cooler) lined up correctly.
