Hi there,

I'm hoping to get some advise from the experts out there...

I have a Toyota Corolla RSI 20v.
When i accelerate, i can feel that the car is holding back. Also when i try to say pull off, to second i think, its like the car chokes up and doesnt want to go, i have to then gear up with the slow acceleration....This is scary, since if i need to overtake, i dunno what to expect...

So i got the idea that maybe the injectors are dirty or not happy, so threw some wayns injector cleaner in the fuel and drove like 200ks, but dont see any real change...so i'm wondering...

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi there,

please be more specific regarding vehicle model, Toyota Corolla RSI 20v, conquest RSI, fiesta RSI ???

Does this only happen when cold?
I had a 20v and if i didn't wait for engine to get to proper temp, it wouldn't perform at all.
Another thing will be the airflow meter on the air box, had that issue on my current corolla, had to take out the aftermarket induction and put stock air box back in, so that it could re-calibrate after 15min back to normal. Also could not accelerate, it would hold back, even thought the engine management light was off. So maybe make sure that all the wiring is good there and that it's seated properly in the induction pipe.

@essop1...Nope, i checked it out...it happens when the engine is warm too...I can check if the wiring and so looks good...
@supersunbird...not sure, but i think the filter was changed on last service...

when you get a chance, disconnect your battery for about 30 min, apparently that resets the computer, so it has to "learn/adapt" again. When i put on a viper exhaust they did that and explained to me why. Worth a try.

Thanks...i will give that a shot tonight to see what happens.

Dirty air filter? Maybe a stored OBD code is present...

Could also be the fuel pump...

Will go and do some inspections...Thanks for now Rickster as well...

As mentioned.... possible fuel filter BUT also can be the plug wires. Had the same problem a old Polo I had where it felt like it held back and then accelerate en then hold back again. Eventually found that the one plug wire was damaged. After it was replaced it ran like clock work.

Some sort of blocked filter, dead MAF sensor or damaged throttle body.

I would try disconnecting the MAF and see what happens

Could be as simply as water in the fuel as well, symptoms sound about right for that.

Firstly i must admit i'm a novice when it comes to cars...So i'll try the simplest things first.

So ive been told that the disconnect battery is apparently a myth...i don't know...but i figured i would give it a shot.

Regarding Flux capacitor...dunno what that means...

Throttle body issues?

@grim...thanks for the video, seems like a simple thing to do....where can i get the cleaner from?

How would i know theres water in the fuel?

If there is no "miss" on the engine, i'm thinking the plugs and leads should be fine?

What i did:
----------------
I disconnected the battery last night and then when i drove off this morning i did not get that "choke" at 3000 revs, however when i pushed it somewhere a long the line i heard a "pop"...theres still a sluggish feel to the acceleration...
