1997 RSI acceleration issues

Clean your airfilter for a start.
Its rainy season now so the dust particles will turn to mud and restrict airflow or worst damage your MAF(Which reads the rate of airflow into the engine)

Spark plugs.

I recently thought my Corsa needed yet another new coilpack as it was doing the same, turns our it only needed new spark plugs :o

Firstly i must admit i'm a novice when it comes to cars...So i'll try the simplest things first.

So ive been told that the disconnect battery is apparently a myth...i don't know...but i figured i would give it a shot.

Regarding Flux capacitor...dunno what that means...

Throttle body issues?

@grim...thanks for the video, seems like a simple thing to do....where can i get the cleaner from?

How would i know theres water in the fuel?

If there is no "miss" on the engine, i'm thinking the plugs and leads should be fine?

What i did:
----------------
I disconnected the battery last night and then when i drove off this morning i did not get that "choke" at 3000 revs, however when i pushed it somewhere a long the line i heard a "pop"...theres still a sluggish feel to the acceleration...

And did the "pop" remain after it warmed up a bit? remember i said that my 20v did the same thing when cold.

I just took a drive now...and looks like the problem is still there...guess the "battery-reset" is possibly a myth or maybe it will make it go away until the ecu picks it up again...

Yup, pop is still there...

Mileage is i dunno maybe around 200K+...

unplug your airflow meter from the airbox, start the car and see if the engine management light comes on! and dry to drive it with the meter unplugged.

@essop1...Is the idea to see if the sensor is working at all...

@Hassan...Should it not "miss" if the leads are funny?

Yip, thing it's very hard with this motors, as they are strong, so i would always start with anything outside of the motor. it would certainly help if you have a friend with a 20v, i think you have the silver top version, then it would make it easier, swap out airflow meter, plugs etc. Like i said in an earlier post, i had the exact same problem with my current corolla and it turned out to be the airflow meter that all of a sudden after 1 year, didn't like the aftermarket induction.

Maybe check your fuel, believe me it happens, i had an attendant put petrol in my diesel with same behavior, that's what i thought had happen to my corolla.

VVT gear could also be the problem as stated by the other guys, but like i said best to make sure everything outside the engine is fine, before going there.

@essop1...I like the idea of dealing with the easy bits first and swapping with working items.

@Billy....yeah please give me a flux capacitor :)

@ponder...thanks

Hi at what RPM is the problem the VVTI controller works from about 5300rpm to the limiter,could be a vvti controller solenoid or vvti filter in the head that is dirty

Could possibly be the following:

1. Oxygen Sensor
2. Distributor cap has a crack

@performance...the "flat spot" is at around 3000rpm....but sluggishness can be felt in most ranges.

@TriggerTRD...Will check distributor cap too.

@OP Have you cleaned the MAF yet?

The cleaner is cheap and should only take a couple of minutes to do.

could be your spark plug leads or even your VVT gear. have them checked

This.
Sometimes the metal cap that fits on to the plug breaks within the lead and you can't spot it. There is still contact but its not solid.
