Hello South Africa,

I'm a competitive gamer in SA and ive decided to get a whole new line for my house so that I can have a separate line to the family while im gaming, because im tired of lagging.

Obviously the most important thing to me is latency. Therefore I want an ISP who will give me the least throttling and down time etc.

I see mweb has a 1mb uncapped "premium" account, which apparently means i wont be throttled.
Telkom dont use the same system as far as im aware and so my thoughts are to go with Mweb because ill get throttled less then telkom.. Is this true?

------

On another note, when applying for the line do i need to pay for another line rental aswell as adsl line speed rental? (Just confirming)

So if someone has info to swing at me please do so :). Resent experiences with whatever ISP etc.

I was with MWEB for two years on a 4Mbps uncapped account. MWEB is by far the best uncapped service in ZA and offers the best performance and latency for gaming, Skype, etc. But if you expect to torrent and use their news server, you may end up disappointed.

I wouldn't use Telkom if it was free

Mweb has good latencies, and OpenWeb is very similar in ping. I tested both and I am doing that comparison based on daytime and night time pings to EU servers. OpenWeb is however unbeatable in terms of http and p2p downloads when u have a silver or gold account. Just my 2 c

Good luck :)

n1ckna5, listen to me man. Go for OpenWeb - the silver package to be exact.

You get 1 extra account, for free. So basically if you cancel your other ISP and go OpenWeb, you get TWO silver accounts, and you won't really pay any more than you are paying right now.
You may even pay less depending on what ISP you are on now! :D

Silver accounts are "tier 3" on OpenWeb, just under Gold - so you will get higher priority than telkom or mweb, too.
(1. vanila | 2. standard | 3. silver | 4. Gold)

You also get free Wifi in 1400 places or something, and Mr.Beep is always on the forums to help you out, he's very helpful and will go out of his way to help you.

If you want to donwload stuff (Usenet/torrents/etc) you will NEVER be throttled, and they don't send abuse letters like Mweb/etc.
They don't even monitor your usage at all. You can also enable SSL encryption no problem, which 90% of other ISPs shlt in the pants for.

PS: there are only a few of those special 2 for 1 accounts left hey, so get it while you can bro (the amount left is not a true number on the site, remember that!)

Thanks for the replies.
I must say that openweb does sound very interesting. And ill probably go with them :)

And ya, seeing as we're already paying for an mweb account, i guess we could just cancel that and use the other free openweb account.

Just a note, why dont you upgrade your line to eg an 2mb line, and run two 1mb accounts on your modem. Then you dont have to double up on your telkom account?

You can do it with a modem like the Bilion in half bridge mode. Your family can use the main account, and you just do an dial in from your pc with the second account for your gaming?

D

If I dial another account on the same line im pretty sure ill still get the same intense lag, as they download torrents etc.

How long does that free account last?

forever
(as long as you stay with them, afaik)

what would the benefit be of a 2 for one account? I see the gold one is just R20 more... any reason why you would suggest the silver (with free account) over the gold? I am currently on a 1mbs line....

well if you have a 4Mbs line for example, it's R459pm for 2 x Silver accounts. You could probably flog the spare account to a friend for R300 (as that account is usually R599)
That means you get a 4Mbs Silver uncapped OpenWeb account for R159.... tell me that doesn't sound good?

Gold is obviously better than silver, but Gold is so perfect, I can't see how Silver would suddenly be unusable?
(Especially since you still get Standard and Vanilla below it - it's definitely no basic internet!)

So basically, while I haven't tried Silver, I'm willing to bet that it's 90% as good as Gold.

For the OP, this deal is especially good since he needs 2 accounts... He can trade in his 1 M-Web account for 2 x Silver OpenWeb accounts, for roughly the same price!

I dont think so, as you dont interfere with each others bandwidth.

[xxxx] - 2MB line
[xx][xx] - two 1MB accounts

Think it's worth a try.
