Just want to find out if anyone has recently taken their kids to get a Smart ID? Mainly want to know what docs exactly they need as some sites say certified copy of birth certificate and others say original document. My son's birth certificate is somewhere in a box after a few moves, I can't even begin to think where but I do have a digital copy that I can just get certified.

Going to a Home affais in Gauteng if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

I think I know why they prefer originals.

We just did it for our youngest - original unabridged birth certificate. One parent.

Both parents need to be present, with their IDs, and the child's original birth certificate
Eish, daughter turns 16 in August and her mom is in England so that is going to be fun.

Perhaps @GrootVoet or one of these forumites might know:

Which home affairs if I might ask? Have read some comments on FB that a copy of the birth certificate was fine.

When my kids turned 16, the school required them to get the smart IDs in preparation for registering for the Grade 12 exams. Once they were 16, they did the process without a parent needing to be present.
Not sure about the document requirements, but I imagine that a certified copy of birth certificate should be fine.

For the passports, prior to 18 both parents needed to sign off on application. This could be done together or at different times at different centres. Once 18, they both did the renewal on their own.

DM me, I could send you details to do the smart ID in central Sandton rather painlessly.

Ok - just got the skinny from the missus...

We, and by that I mean she, did it via Absa. She had to upload the documents and it was recommended that she bring them along when the time came for the kid to go to the bank and capture the biometrics.

Did my daughter's all by myself without her mother, the child has to be present. They did require the mother's certified ID copy on top of the birth certificate, though.

Thank you so much, but I already have a booking for Friday afternoon at the HA office in Benoni.

Original birth certificate?

my daughter made an appointment.went alone ,original papers and was finished in 15 minutes , zero hassles .

Conflicting info incoming...

Did my son's online and went in last week for the biometrics. You have to upload docs...
When we got at HA, they said the docs didn't upload. I just printed a copy of his birth cert and they accepted. Had my ID and mother's ID on hand.
