1TB Extreme Triple Interface External Hard Drive

Of the top of my head the following have fw800 - MacPro, MacBookPro's, and the 24" iMac.
What macs do you have?
17" Powerbook, 17" MacBookPro, 12" iBook, MacMini, and a 15" Titanium Powerbook.

Also have a 1400c that still works :)

USB2 might burst higher but fw400 has a higher sustained data transfer rate.

FW800 is much, much faster than USB2 or FW400.

Can you give me some examples of fw800 speeds?

I transfered 700MB of data off my usb stick to my friend's 3.4gig pentium, running Vista(which does make a difference) in less than 30 seconds.

e-sata is vary fast....1.5/3 gbps .....you just have to have a esata port, or use a pci esata card or connect ot straight to the a sata port inside the computer.....youll get same speeds as transferring data to a internal sata hdd

a coolermaster xcraft sata ->esata and usb enclosure costs bout R370

Sucks that PC doesn't have an equivalent. I'm currently running out of space due to a large number of virtual machine appliances so I was looking for a faster portable option than USB. I think I'm just going to have to get one long SATA cable.

Sorry - I dont have a fw800 drive at hand but it's pretty easy to work out - USB2 has a maximum transfer rate of up to 480 Mbit/s - FW400 is 400 Mbit/s and FW800 is . . . . . 800 Mbit/s.

Buy a PC card - they're not expensive. Even the FW400 is more than enough speed. I regularly boot off mine.

I've got bog standard 400 firewire already.

Incidentally how much did that 24" imac set you back? Quite an investment for fast throughput.

I dont have an iMac - not fond of desks so I've only got the

The MacMini is the exception but thats hooked up to the plasma.

Ah sorry I misread your quote. That MacBookPro must've set you back atleast R20k though, thats crazy money.
