So i got the asus rt-n56u router, found here http://za.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTN56U/. Now it states it has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz range. now when i set up the ssid's i can only find the 2.4ghz range. Does this mean my laptop only supports 2.4ghz range? Do laptops (or any dongles etc) come in the 5ghz range?

yeah you can buy laptop internal card or external 5ghz devices, they generally cost more.

99.99% of laptops I've worked with were 2.4ghz only. 5ghz internal cards and dongles are readily available though.

2.4 bigger area, will go though walls much easier , but slower.

5ghz is faster but its more narrow and wont go though walls so easily.

What are the pros and cons of using eiher 2.4 or 5?

2.4ghz - Everyone and their dog are using it these days. The spectrum contains a lot of noise because of this. I mainly use it for short distance communication within the house for example. Can go through walls.
5.0ghz - Less people use it hence there are less noise leading to better performance over longer distances. I use 5ghz for my WUG linkup over a longer distance.

But a 5ghz router would be useless to you if you only have 2.4ghz devices.

See the following article about channels : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels

Basically 2.4ghz sucks as yes there are 13/14 frequencies that are usable, however the channel's overlap on frequencies so you get a lot of noise. Whereas on 5ghz channels are frequencies are mapped 1 to 1 on 20mhz increments, so a lot less noise.

Hi All,

Does anyone know which devices use typically 5GHz vs 2.4 Ghz. I want to get a new dual band modem/router as my current one continuously/randomly drops the internet link? I typically have an XboxOne, 2 X iPads, 2 X Galaxy Phones, 1 X iPhone and a Samsung Series 5 TV (wired cable to modem) connecting to my router at any given time. Browsing and surfing performance is not too bad (on my current 300MB/s router), but Xbox performance is not great and TV is horrible (continuously buffers everything, especially video apps like YouTube).

I have a 4MB unshaped line with AfriHost so I want to know if it will benefit me to get something like the TP-Link AC1750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router. They claim 1.3Gbps wireless speeds over the 5GHz band and 450Mbps over the 2.4GHz band, but I don't want to spend R2000+ if I won't get the benefit of the increased speed. Otherwise I could look at something like a modem/router in the 450/300Mbps (5Ghz) and 300Mbps (2.4Ghz) range, something like the TP-LINK TD-W8980 router that claims simultaneous 2.4GHz 300Mbps and 5GHz 300Mbps connections?

So yes, I actually need advice on what router will work better/best with my current line speed and if there really is a way to make best use of the dual band capability? If I go for the AC1750 will 4MB be enough to get better performance or should I go up to 6/8/10MB line?

Thanks much!

What device do you have? If its 802.11ac compatible it will support 5Ghz

Well, seeing that your TV buffers and you say it's got a cable going to router getting a faster wireless device will not help for that... issue is probably your 4Mb internet connection.

Take those wireless numbers with a pinch of salt, you will never get the claimed speeds of wireless.
Lets take the claimed 1.3Gb 5Ghz... First off with only 1Gb ports on router it's already down to 1Gb max...
But if you look at speed tests done on these wireless routers the max might be closer to 600Mbps if you are lucky, and only have one device connected to it.

Yes, you might see an improvement getting a AC device, but your browsing speeds will obviously not improve as it will still only be 4Mb max...

So, if you copy movies (or any big files) around on your internal network an AC device will defiantly help, if not then a cheaper one will be fine.

Thanks for the replies!! seems like I still have some homework to do...

I suggest you look at the Afrihost threads here before you go and buy new hardware, the fix may be as simple as changing isp.
