Cape Town - Two Cape Town policemen are in a critical condition after being shot on Wednesday morning, a police spokesperson said.

The incident happened while the two, a warrant officer and a reservist constable, were on a routine patrol in Athlone, Warrant Officer Ian Bennett said.

He said that at about 04:20 the pair stopped a car to search it, and a man and a woman got out.

The man fired a number of shots at the policemen, critically injuring both of them.

One had been taken to Groote Schuur hospital, and the other to Vincent Pallotti hospital.

The man and the woman, who fled the scene, were arrested in Kewtown two-and-a-half hours later.

The names of the shot policemen were not being released at this stage, Bennett said.
