But Harrison’s family and their attorney, Geoff Henley, released the video saying they believe it should spark reforms for policies and training on how police interact with the mentally ill. Also, they said officers should have first tried less lethal force on Harrison, such as pepper spray or a Taser.

“This is a perfect video for the Dallas Police Department to use in training as an example of what not to do,” said older brother Sean Harrison. “You don’t yell at them — that only agitates them.”

Also for the record, only after watching the video on my Liveleak feeds did I find out there was quite a bit of racist sensationalism being stirred by news sources. The excessive force by the police is what really irked me.
 
Have the seen the amount of damage that a screwdriver can do?

He was an idiot for engaging the police.
 
Once again this is an example of police going in without the necessary foreknowledge and preparation.
If they had heard from the dispatcher that the man was mentally ill or bipolar, they would have most likely sent in a hostage negotiator or counsellor first.
This seems to be a problem in the USA where police are just being dispatched without being told what to expect.

It seems like it was the mom who was the one who called the cops and she repeated the info when she opened the door.
So yeah, I'm guessing she must have told the dispatcher that her "bipolar son was acting up and threatening her" or something like that.
 
Can you imagine how that mom must be blaming herself now for having called the cops at all.
her son is dead because she called the cops.

I don't think she expected them to shoot him. Then again, it was Texas. Agreed on the training part, why didnt they back up when they saw the screwdriver? Either way it's amazing how technology now gives us real FPS videos.

It would be interesting to have a leak of the dispatcher call.

If you have a gun vs a screwdriver your preferred position is to be upright, if you walk backwards you can trip and you will be at a distinct disadvantage against a screwdriver on the floor.

In the 911 call, Harrison’s mother described her son’s mental disorders, and those details were relayed to the officers by dispatchers, Henley said. The video shows Harrison’s mother walking calmly out of the house in the 200 block of Glencairn Drive seconds prior to the shooting.

I'd be very surprised if they aren't trained to deal with close arm combat, or at the very least carry non-lethal weapons.

Interesting and shocking video. I think the officers should have used less lethal force here. The shooting was unnecessary and could easily have been avoided.

Yeah, so the officers were completely in the wrong to react to a mentally ill patient like they did and the department was in the wrong for sending untrained officers to deal with a mentally ill man.
I see a massive wrongful death lawsuit coming up here.
 
Cops have so many non-lethal options, tasers, pepper spray, bean bag rounds.

But no, lets kill him first.
