2 identical monitors but different colours?

Can anyone help explain this?

I have 2 identical DELL U2412M monitors connected to a single graphics card both via DVI.
The settings on the monitors are identical and both use the same .icc colour profile supplied by DELL.
Yet the newer monitor has a distinctly greenish cast and the older is more blue.
No amount of tweaking custom colours etc can get the displays to be identical.
As I use them both for photography it's a big problem for me.

Is a problem that. There is a color difference between all monitors and TV's. Take a look at a TV store with all the TV's displaying the same image.

Try and see if you can't manually correct the color somehow. That's the best you will get it. This problem was raised when consumers started using duel screens.

First, are you sure that they are identical? On the sticker on the back it will say what revision each monitor is, i.e. REV ##

Second, monitors will vary even within the same production run and revision. If you're using monitors for photography, then you'll need to get them properly individually calibrated using a colorimeter/spectrophotometer in order to be accurate and as close to identical as possible. The default Dell profile is clearly not accurate enough.
 
Yeah, if they were bought at different times, you may find that the underlying technology has changed. e.g. the Dell 2007WFP was made with a TN panel, and then later changed to an IPS panel, even though the model name was not changed.

Get a proper colour meter, and calibrate them individually.

Yup - I went through a bit of effort to get my 3 monitors synched up. A friend from the US brought over a calibration device and it actually worked pretty well. Something like : http://www.ormsdirect.co.za/display/monitor-calibration

Also note that depending on the monitor - the angle that you are viewing it at might affect the colour slightly (but perhapy less so than what you are experiencing).
 
Thanks guys for all the input.

I managed to solve the problem by using the NVidia Control Panel of my graphics card instead of the adjustments on the display and fine tuning the hue adjustment for the 2nd monitor. They now look identical for all practical purposes.

For those IPS panels you should technically use a calibration puck and accompanying software to calibrate the monitor directly.

I also have the same monitors, did you reset both with the OSD (menu on the screen?) one of mine was brighter than the other, and it was the brightness level on the OSD that differed
