A police officer was shot dead and another critically wounded when an unknown man opened fire in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, on Wednesday.
Police spokeswoman Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said the shooting happened at the corner of King George and Wolmarans streets around 7pm.
"It is alleged the members had just got onto the shift and were busy with their patrols when they noticed a suspicious vehicle with three occupants.
"The members stopped the vehicle and approached to conduct a search. One of the occupants of the vehicle was aggressive and non-cooperative," said Mogale.
She said the constable tried to calm him down but another occupant pulled out a firearm and shot the officer in his right eye.
The man then fired a second shot, killing the other officer.
The wounded officer was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
"We are appealing to anyone who might have witnessed what happened to come forward with the information," said Mogale.
