1. will ubuntu recognize the HD3650 from ati. i think ive read that it is not good with ati cards...

2. i tried to install ubuntu within wibndows ... to get a feel for it, but it bombs out half way through the installation saying there is an i/o error on the harddrive (actually it keeps mentioning the dvd, but seeing as i dont have the dvd int he drive when it is installing, thats a no go.

much appreciated!

1. It should, you'll have to enable non free software to get the ATI driver

2. On the same partition as windows? Or just running it while in windows? When exactly does the error come up?

Have a look for it on the ubuntu hardware compatibility list, or search for it on the ubuntu forums to get an idea. In general nvidia works better than ATI on linux, though I don't have personal ATI experience. :o

What do you mean you're installing it in Windows? Are you using wubi? Are you installing from an iso on your hd?

With the latest ATI drivers you should be fine.. but dont expect compiz(nice 3d goodies) to work without having to fiddle a bit. I know the 2 and 3 series HD cards have the best support on the 8.4 release of the ATI drivers so give it a go!

My Ubuntu (32-bit) is problem free and I am running the glx-new nvidia drivers (stock)

well there is an option to run it "in windows". im not sure how its done, but at the boot, you get an option of choosing windows or ubuntu. then when you choose ubuntu, it installs it in a file. thats about it...

Yeah. That's wubi. It makes a change to your bootloader. It is not the same as running Ubuntu in the actual form though, it is actually meant as a "demo" so you can see what it is all about. Sure, you can use it and all, but won't run as efficient as running it on its own partition.

In Windows you need an md5 program (runs fine in DOS) if I remember correctly.

um... give us a

Code:
dpkg --get-selections | grep nvidia

output?

We're looking for nvidia-glx or nvidia-glx-new or nvidia-glx-legacy or nothing at all :p
Are you talking about Desktop Effects? They won't work unless you have a working driver installed. What nvidia card do you have?
