2001 BMW Z3 1.9... underpowered?

I don't believe the 1.9 version was released in SA. As far as I know locally it was the 2.8lt and then got bumped up to a 3.0lt in 2000. If its is the 1.9( grey import? ), brand new the engine put out 103kw, 180NM torque. I reckon it would get left behind by a 2001 Mazda MX-5.

The styling... you just will not convince me that the Z3 is not the original Batmobile and for this reason I must have one!

Just looking for the cheapest one I can find that's why I was inquiring about the smallest engine as per Edmunds ;)

Kind of thinking a well kept one might have some cred as a classic a decade from now.

You can find the 2.8lt for anything from R 90 - 120 k, but the mileage will not be pretty. Rather stick to a convertable made in Japan. Much cheaper to maintain.

2000 S2000 is around R130,000 - and is WAY more car (no offence)

EDIT: On that note, I've driven the Z3, Z4, MG TF160, MX5, few others, and the S2000 - and chose the S2000

I really hate to do this to you but I cannot imagine someone under the age of 60 in a Honda... any Honda. Maybe that's just my problem/snobbery/pointless bit of dogma but I just don't see Hondas as luxury items and I seriously doubt that the S2000 will ever have any credibility as a classic car, I think the Bimmer does stand a chance of that at least.

Hey, to each his own - I'm sure your S2000 gives you chills in the bends, smiles on the straights and a feeling of pride when you see it standing in the drive... just like any piece of beautiful engineering should :)

Want classic? Go for the 2001 MX-5. Or rather, if you can get the 2004 Model (the last MK.2.5 shape before the new one). I love mine to bits, can't wait to get into it each morning and afternoon.
Now if only I can one day get my hands on the mazdaspeed version. :)

Under the age of 60 in a Honda? :confused: I can't imagine my grandfather driving a civic or a S2000.

Z3 is a mid-life crisis - best I can afford, old mans car.... I don't think I've seen any of the younger generation driving them - but like you said personal choice.

Only heard good things about that car. Not a huge fan of the styling and a little concerned about maintaining an old rotary engine going forward.

No worries, it's not a rotary engine. Just a normal 1.8 Doule Overhead cam with VVT. I wouldn't underestimate it though, as a comparison, it weighs almost 300KG less than my piece of crap 1300 Tazz used to weigh. Power to weight ratio baby, that's wherein the magic lies. Couple that with rear-wheel drive and independent double wishbone suspension, "mechanical" and clunky short shifting gearbox, ABS, leather, A/C etc...and you have all you need to enjoy the ride. :)

Also, AFAIK it's rated on the top 3 list of the most reliable cars of the decade. (http://www.gizmag.com/go/5657/ and http://hubpages.com/hub/10-most-reliable-cars-of-the-last-decade).
Mine was 9 years old when I got it, still looks brand new, with 118K on the clock. I've done 6000KM since the last service and have not used any extra oil yet.

Also, never underestimate handling when it comes to a car, I always see people comparing engine size etc. But truth be told, better handling always wins IMO. My flatmate has a 2.0 Audi A3 and I hate driving in it even though I know it's an awesome car, it's so far removed from any of the fun elements of the road that I might as well be in bed when sitting in it...zzzzz...

LOL - like you said, personal opinion :p

I can see an old person driving the old Honda Ballade - but not their newer generation of cars.
