Hi folks

Some interesting facts about the speeds tests conducted on this site during 2003:

Average speed recorded: 129 kbits/sec
Lowest speed: 0.44 kbits/sec
Highest speed: 341 kbits/sec
Number of tests: 210

I will try to post some more processed statistics about the tests soon.

Isn’t it strange that 512kbits is the advertised rate and yet at no stage has anyone achieved it?
If fact, if you look at the average of 210kbits, it is 1/2 of what is promised. (Unless my interpretation of kbits is incorrect and Telkom has it's own 'standard' of measurement - not unlike their exchange rate applied to modem prices.)
It makes the 256k offering of Sentech look very attractive!
Isn't this also ground for the ICASA complaint?

You don't know what you don't know.

Hi Mux

The average is 128 kbits/sec, which is 1/4 of the advertised speed. It will indeed be interesting to see what speeds the Sentech products produce.

Hi rpm - you don't by any chance have stats calculated by geographic location of users? I've seen postings on other threads where users complain about being routed via Durban, PE and Cape Town - this might have additional relevancy to the complaint...

Hi Mbs

Unfortunately I don’t have that information. I simply summarized the information supplied by users regarding the speed test and interpreted the information.

Hey all.

Everytime I do a speed test on myadsl.co.za I cry, the speed results are bad. but when I download from an international site, I get 53/56 KB per second easy. I take it that this test is also international, mabey the servers on their side are loaded with bandwith that we receive poor results?

Hi,

keep in mind what it is that Telkom is selling you:

Bandwidth from your office/home across copper wire to an exchange.

You will find that their own bandwidth measurement facility will usually almost give you what they sell you.

But Telkom abuses its de facto monopoly position to forcing a service without any guarentees except "best effort" into the market.

So, you must be happy to have some kind of connectivity to the outside world. You are at the mercy of the Telkom bosses and their willingness to rather spend money on bandwidth than on their own salaries and mercedes'.

Otherwise: Happy new Year to all!

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

Hehe. I'd love to run a script on my Linux machine doing a speed test, say every 2 hours, and keep proper track of the statistics.

ONLY PROBLEM IS! I'd probably be capped after a week! LOL. All these speed tests we're doing, all go towards our 3Gigabyte cap.

Isn't that ridiculous?

These are the average speeds for adsl in UK,way below our ADSL.
