Today I came across a very good looking 2004 golf highline 2.0 with 210000km on the clock going for 75000.

The car looks well maintained, apparently owned by one lady and serviced at VW upto the latest service, although when I looked at the books it was last stamped in 2017.

I test drove it and it just felt so much better than getting an i20 or Figo.

Any thoughts on this car? Am I getting myself into trouble with an old car?

It is overpriced for the mileage and had no regular maintenance. They were good cars but I would get myself a mint condition i20 1.4 or 1.6 for that money.

High mileage, partial service history, 'one lady owner'.

Run away, MaSimbaY. Run. Run away, and never return.

How much would you pay for this? I have looked around and I have noticed that they are ranging between 65 and 80

R75k for a 16 year old car with 220k km's??

Waaaay too overpriced. R50k maybe, but definitely not R75k. I also see some minor dings on the body work.

You have to take into consideration that this car is 16 years old with very high mileage. You'll continually be pouring money into it as old worn out parts break.

IIRC you are in Cape Town? Looks like used cars are expensive over there, it looks like a properly cared for car so at most R55k.

Something is bound to go wrong and need fixing at that mileage and since the last service was in 2017 I would really haggle for a better deal as you would be spending some money soon.

I have tried to look man. There is mo such thing as a mint condition i20 for that price. If you know of any please let me know. They are all accident damaged and really not road worthy.
This golf is in mint condition

I am in Cape Town, willing to go places to get something decent though. This car looks like the best i could find

You can get a newer model 2006 Golf 5 2.0TDi with lower mileage for cheaper;

Trust me, we this is a dodgy deal. Jeppes town is where all the nigerians sell cars. They post unrealistic deals like this and when you get there its a whole different ball game.
Also, I can assure you that mileage is tuned down

Is it wver possible to find a car of this age and mileage that is in good condition and you don’t have much work to do on it?

Bad advice IMO. At least a Golf would be far, far cheaper to maintain than an old super luxury sedan.
Life's too short to worry about what might go wrong if it all checks out.

Besides the car being old and the price there's nothing much wrong with it, a good, solid 2.0l NA engine is still good for another 200k kms, they never tuned for power, that 2.0 does not even come close to 100kW iirc.

If you feel the car is good enough at least negotiate the price, even R65k is too much make an offer not exceeding R60k, if the owner refuse just walk away.

Thanm you, I did feel that it is a soilid vehicle. Didnt quite understand what you meant by this “they never tuned for power, that 2.0 does not even come close to 100kW iirc.”
I think I will loose the negotiation battle as the dealership insist this car will not go down because of the condition of the car.

I was merely alluding to the reliability of the engine, 85kW while many other manufacturers pushes for over 100kW with the same size, it means it doesn't work hard making it more reliable, many of them are on the market are well over the 200k kms.

They are bluffing as dealers always do and would let it go for less than that, make a firm offer, leave your details and go home.
