2006 Jaguar X Type 3.0 V6

I have this buddy who is selling his Jaguar X Type. Never been much of a fan of the X Type, always thought of it as an old mans car (still think it is but hey maybe I am getting old :p )

He comes over last night because he says I should take a look at it. I drove it around a while last night and all I can say is what a beaut! This car glides over some crappy JHB roads like its riding over silk, and its got 144kw of power which is not much for its body or engine size but it is definitely adequate. The interior is very wood heavy (old man trait?) but I must say I am IMPRESSED with this car.

Its got 98 000km's on and now I am seriously thinking of taking it off his hands. Its got a full service history with Jaguar too.

Does anybody have any experience with Jags, good bad or ugly stories?

My wife has a Fiat 500 and my current ride is an SLK, but it would be great to have a big Jag as an additional car.
 
These cars are really awesome long distance cars. I don't think they were ever the prettiest things on the road but that probably wasn't the goal like the current lineup form Jaguar.

One thing to keep in mind is that typically these 'English' cars depreciate very quickly - but then again for a car of this age this probably isn'y very big concern. And I'm saying English in quotation marks because Jaguar is owned by Ford.

I think Jaguars post the Ford era are generally quite reliable. I don't think I've ever seen one of these X types with less than 200k on the clock, but obviously if something does go wrong you should be prepared for a hell of an invoice :D
 
I don't know much about Jags but have never heard major issues regarding reliability, but would love to hear some issues if there are any.

That's exactly what I thought while driving it yesterday, long distance trips would be an absolute pleasure.

It's a 2006, it'll be worth nothing already, which is part of what makes that type of vehicle a good buy. Especially if you have another vehicle around so it's no big deal if it spends a little time in a workshop.
 
Some of the parts might actually be a bit cheaper, as they're shared with the Mondeo (front brake pads, for example). The 3.0 is AWD too.

That's a lot of car for that price. Even if you only get another 100 000km out of it and you dump it, it's still only 55c/km capital costs. You'll lose more than R55k in value doing 100 000km in any other car. And once it's paid for itself you can't really lose.

My thoughts exactly. Fuel consumption is not the greatest obviously but then again having an SLK its nothing new lol

Off the Jaguar range of that time, the X-Type is actually the one one that I like the most.

And, yes, they were owned by Ford at that time by they're owned by Tata now since 2008 and you can see what R & D Tata have pushed into that brand, judging from the new models coming from that line.

I'd say go for it OP; know a few people who owns those and have had trouble-free motoring so far.
 
I am twitching to make the purchase now. Been speaking to him this morning and he says I am welcome to loan the car for the weekend to make up my mind so might just do that.
 
How much is a service on a car like that?


Can you get spares from autozone?
 
It's a buyer's market and especially at that price with a known owner it's a steal.

If you were buying new it would have been a different story as they lose value like nothing.

I definitely would!

You're absolutely correct - they are great on long distance trips. Can't speak for the 3.0, but I certainly enjoy my 2.2D. As for issues - yes, waited 4 weeks for Jaguar Cape Town to replace a thermostat (it was stuck open), but that's more indicative of a bad dealership than bad service from the brand in general.

That is a good price, especially considering the low kilometers and full service history.
