just for interests sake - taken from an Arsenal blogging site:

Another player who scares defenders is Cristiano Ronaldo and AW revealed we were close to signing him at one stage. I thought this was a story everyone knew but it seems not. The story, as I understand it, is that we had agreed a fee of around £4.5m with Sporting Lisbon and the transfer was going through only for United to gazump us to the tune of £12.5m. Rather a lot, you have to say (considering they were willing to accept so much less from us), and it was one of the transfers that caused the Coolmore boys (Magnier and McManus) to ask questions of the way the club was being run when they had a significant shareholding in United. Make of that what you will. All water under the bridge now though.

just a thought, if wenger can spot talent, and he did with CR, why didnt he match (or beat) United's offer if he knew that CR will grow to be the Worlds best ? Evidently CR is worth much more than 50m GBP that Real offered, so again i ask why didnt Wenger put up a fight ?

yeah but he wont spend that kind of money on (potential) talent..

for ex:

Diarra's departure ensured that Arsenal made a net profit during the transfer window - not for the first time since Wenger has been manager. The Frenchman admitted that he gets extra satisfaction from balancing the books.

"I feel that your club being in a good financial situation is very important, for your stability, and you have a responsibility not to get the club bankrupt," said Wenger. "I would not like to come out here and say the club is absolutely on bare bones.

"[Being in credit] is down to the quality of work. I don't feel managers get enough credit for that."

Well that just proves that he aint that good in spotting talent AND he is not a risk-taker. great leaders take risks. dont get me wrong, Wenger is good but if you telling me he wont pay for talent (12.5m is nothing & based on your comment) then to me he aint that good of a manager.

Im such an idiot that I didnt realise Eboue is so much better than Ronaldo.
Actually Eboue is good that I think Real Madrid are going to offer 50mil +
for him. Eboue is so good that he is talk of the EPL.
good going Wenger ! but guess what , he is the biggest idiot for not signing CR, cos united bought him for 12.5mil and he worth how much ?
over 50mil, i REPEAT ! OVER 50 f'kin mil ! ;)

Anybody actually manage to watch the united game? I hear the spurs goal was dodgey? And there was a lot of extra time so that we could score an equaliser:):)

And i concede, Spurs are getting stronger, but i still think Berbatov is leaving and if/when he does, they will break again unless they replace him with a top striker.

OK now i think Scholes was totally out-muscled. Anderson should have started, he can control the midfield. Scholes clearly cant do it anymore. He can unlock defences but Spurs were too strong, and we played like crap again.

hj i watched the first half of the spurs game

that goal was not dodgy at all man

it was a really well worked goal, there is no possible way jenas handled that ball while falling backwards and could not see the ball

i agree scholes was totally outta the game, united missed carrick today in a big way either play carrick or anderson
im sorry i know its scholes first game back but i think he is unbalancing the team

no creativity in the midfield
