Arsenal physio Gary Lewin has been credited with saving Eduardo da Silva's career after the striker suffered a broken leg against Birmingham City on Saturday.
As the Evening Standard reports, Lewin quickly realised that the next 45 minutes would be vital in his bid to save Eduardo's career and so he adressed the communication barrier as Eduardo had started speaking in his native tongue of Portuguese.
The Arsenal physio immediately radioed to the bench to ask for substitute Gilberto's help as a translator. The Brazilian's task was to explain to Eduardo what Lewin was going to do next and how he should signal with his hand if he felt new pain.
Lewin then gave Eduardo oxygen and 'laughing gas' to relieve the immense pain before a vacuum splint could be applied to the forward's left leg.
Once Eduardo was delicately stretchered off and taken to hospital, the club's medical staff liaised with doctors and advocated an immediate operation. Lewin knew that any delay could seriously jeopardize Eduardo's health as he ran the risk of infection because his bone had gone through his skin.
The operation re-set the broken bones and the dislocated ankle, with small screws being used to repair the ruptured medial ligament.
