For some strange reason I have the urge to get an E60 BMW 5-series as I've always had a love for them. Looking at prices I noted that one can pick up the 550i for roughly the same price as a 523i. My current car is great and reliable and does everything I need it to, yet I'm still so tempted.

Does anyone have any advice to add that I should know about these cars? I know I'm going to be paying a lot more in fuel and a fair amount more in general maintenance but I don't want to have to fix major issues that are going to crop up in the near future.

Thanks in advance for any advice that can either set my mind at ease or put me off from an expensive mistake.

Do it ...! E60 is lovely & distinctive & that 550 motor is super sweet!

Just keep lots of greenbacks around for when **** breaks.

I personally prefer the E39.

But hell, if you can afford the fuel then do it.

That's exactly my concern, I'm currently driving a Honda Accord 2.4 of similar vintage where I feel rather safe in terms of **** not breaking.

There's a reason cars like this are cheap. You will sell a kidney each month to pay for the fuel, and services/repairs will be on the pricey side.

OP, buy a Mazda RX8 High power.

You must really hate the OP.

The claimed figures for the BMW are 15.8/7.4/10.5 l/100km. For the accord 13.7l/6.9l/9.1l 100 km so it seems the difference is not that big. Of course, this is simply going off the claimed figures available online.

The E60 is the ugliest 5 series ever. Looks like it's wearing masquerade ball masks in the front and rear.
